FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (5 December 2005)

ALEXANDRIA HISTORIC HOME & BUILDING TOUR SPANS 1850s to 1940s

The Alexandria Museum has organized a second tour of historic buildings and homes in the Village of Alexandria, to be held this Saturday, 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., tickets will be on sale at the Museum, $10 with discounts for seniors and children. Local churches are also opening their sanctuaries and offering music or children’s programming during the tour hours; the Alexandria Public Library offers a free art show with musical accompaniment during the tour. The oldest home on the tour is an 1850s farm house formerly the summer residence of Willoughby Dayton Miller (called the “Father of Modern Dentistry”). The newest home on the tour was built in 1940 as the residence and office of an apothecary and has a unique floor plan for this function as well as classic Arts & Crafts fireplaces, entry and extensive oak woodwork.

Other homes on the tour include a circa 1889 American farmhouse with a recent addition including trim elements milled to match the restored original woodwork, and an 1865 home with major additions in 1930 including ornate interior columns and carved room divider. A private business building including elements that may be as early as 1859 is on the tour; occupying businesses have ranged from a seed store and chicken market (initial use) to mortgage banking.

All four local churches will be open to the public during tour hours. Alexandria Baptist Church (built 1901 and featuring original stained glass, murals and plaster ceiling decorations) adult choir will sing music of the season 1-2 p.m., and the church Handbell Choir will perform 2-2:30 p.m. Alexandria United Methodist Church (1869 originally, but extensively remodeled in 1913, with fine woodwork and stained glass) will have children’s crafts 1-5 p.m. The Church of Christ at Alexandria will offer tours of their new addition and a continuous slide show of historic photos from the Museum collections, 1-5 p.m. Emmanuel Praise Church choirs will sing seasonal praise music 3-4 p.m.; this church building was completed in 1843, and was extensively renovated in 2001 with sensitivity to the original plan.

A free show of local artists’ work will be hung in the Alexandria Public Library and open during the tour hours. Live music will complement the artworks.

The Alexandria Museum is located in the historic (pre-1860) Laycock House, at 23 West Main Street (SR 37) in the center of the Village of Alexandria, Licking County. The collections were founded over 30 years ago by local citizens active in the Alexandria Community Council, the oldest continuously operated community council in Ohio, in an effort to preserve local artifacts and provide a center for community history. The Museum is open regularly on Sundays from 2 pm to 4 pm and by appointment. For more information call Martha Sturgill (740-924-2453) or Donna Herring (740-924-0516).
