Functional Amblyopia Definition  Functional Amblypoia is a decrease in eye vision usually found in early childhood children. It can be cured, if found relatively early, by therapy, glasses, and a process know as patching. Functional Amblyopia is often referred to as "lazy eye". What is Patching? Patching consits of putting either a cloth eye patch over the glasses, or an actual path on the eye. The eye that is covered is the "good" functioning eye so that the "bad" eye must be used, therefore increasing muscle use and strength. How many people suffer from Functional Amblyopia? It is estimated that close to 2-3 percent of the U.S. have some form of amblyopia. Suffering most from this particular vision problem are prematurely-born children and children who's parents suffered from the dysfuntion.

http://www.eyeworld.org/aug02/0802p46.html Written by:Michelle Stephenson, correspondent for The Journal of Pediatric Opthalmology Summary of Article: Basically gives an overview of the pros and cons for refractive eye surgery in young children. Medical Doctors are interviewed and give their view points on the surgery. They conclude that limiting eye surgery to children who suffer from a severe case of amblyopia or those that are too old for "patching" techniques should be the ones to undergo the procedure. http://www.findarticles.com/cf_dls/m0FSL/5_75/86040260/p1/article.jhtml Written By: John Hopkins University Research: AORN Journal Summary of Article: John Hopkins University found out that painless eye-drops are just as effective as eye-patching in curing children's mild cases of amblyopia.79$ of children were found to have improved vision with eye-patching and 74% of children were found to have improved vision with simple eye-drops. 97% of children and parents found the eye-drops to be easier though.
