Article Summaries

Blowing Away Childhood Asthma (Article 1)

This article was fairly short, however, it was informative. It discussed the problem of asthma within the United Kingdom. A study done in the U.K. found that asthmatic children who play instruments have a decrease in asthmatic symptoms. These children were found to have their day time coughing and breathlessness decresed by 58% and their night time coughing and breathlessness decreased by 70%. This study has been going on for four years and the name of the study of U.K. children who played instruments is called the Bronchial Boogie.

Quick Queries for Checking Asthma Control (Article 2)

This article described the Childhood Asthma Control Test in which four questions are generally asked to children with asthma between the ages of 4 and 11. These questions are as follows: How is your asthma today? How much of a problem is your asthma when you run, exercise, or play sports? Do you cough because of your asthma? Do you wake up during the night because of your asthma? Parents were also asked questions and then the researchers would total up both the child's and the parents' scores, the highest being a 27, which means that the child and parents are handling the asthma appropriately; whereas a score of 19 or lower means that the parent and child need to do a better job of controlling the child's asthma. The test is also available online at www.lungusa.com.

Childhood Asthma (Article 3)

This article was very informative. It described the whole process of how asthma affects the lungs and how many young, American children are often diagnosed with asthma. It discusses how asthma affects the airways within the lungs and how that overreaction within the lungs can create mucus. Then the article goes on to say that there are different levels of asthma and that children with asthma should use their inhaler or other medicines frequently or less frequently depending on the severity of their asthma. Then the website went into detail about each different type of medicine used to treat asthma. I found this part to be a bit too scientific, so I did not include it in my webpage. However, overall this website gave me a better understanding of childhood asthma.
