American Traditions is a 4-H shooting sports club with an emphasis on rifle, pistol, shotgun, archery, and living history. Our advisors have received special training to become certified by the Ohio 4-H shooting sports program to instruct these projects, with the primary focus being on youth development, safety and responsibility.

In the shooting projects we teach SAFETY, SAFETY,SAFETY! We teach the essentials of firearms safety and learn about proper shooting technique, parts of the gun, range commands and etiquette. Members keep records of their progress and learning experiences in the associated project book which they then use for project evaluation in July.

In the living history project (also considered a shooting sports project) members choose a time period and become a person living in that era. As part of the project they learn about the clothing, food, tools and skills of everyday life at that time. Living history participants keep records of their project and research in the associated project book which they then use for project evaluation in July.

      2012 GROUP PROJECT

The group project for this year will be: "Respect, Responsibility, & Rifles". We will be learning & practicing basic rifle fundamentals. We will also be exploring the "Pillars of Character" from the national program "Character Counts".

The group project will be completed at the club meetings. Members will not need to purchase or complete a project book for the group project; however, they will be expected to participate at meetings and attend group judging in order to successfully complete this project. Enrollment in the group project will satisfy the club requirement for enrollment in a shooting sports project. Members without previous firearms experience may wish to also take the project #630 "Safe Use of Guns".

Participants may not use any of these items or three-dimensional replicas of these items as a part of any display. Displays also may not include any part of an arrow longer than 6 inches. Displays may not include any ‘loaded’ ammunition. CLUB POLICIES

    SAFETY
  • Approved hearing & eye protection will be required for all activities involving firearms. Eye protection is required for archery, fire starting with flint & steel, and any other activities deemed necessary by instructors. Hearing protection is also required for non-participants who are in the vicinity of the range.
  • Safe firearms handling rules will be followed at all times. Failure to follow the established rules may result in the member being removed from the event and/or the club, depending on the situation.
  • Inattention & horseplay on the range will not be tolerated. Violators will be warned and/or removed from the range at the discretion of the range safety officer.
  • Personal firearms must be inspected and approved by an advisor prior to use during a 4-H meeting.
  • No reloaded ammunition may be used.
  • Always wear closed toed shoes (no sandals, no bare feet)
  • Advisors must approve shooting sports projects prior to enrollment since some projects require more experience and maturity than others.

    ATTENDANCE
  • Good attendance is required. New information and skills will be covered at each meeting so attendance is very important. Since 4-H standards require members to attend a minimum of six meetings during the 4-H season, failure to attend six or more meetings will result in an incomplete project and advisors will not sign the project book.
  • Members must attend the club safety sessions during club meetings at the beginning of the 4-H season in order to participate in club shooting program. A safety review will be presented at the beginning of each shooting sports activity. Members must attend the safety discussion before shooting, therefore shooters must attend the beginning of the shooting session and not arrive mid way through the session.
  • Members & parents are encouraged to discuss any concerns about attendance with an advisor, preferably before missing a meeting (except in emergencies). Certain activities will be "excused", including other 4-H events.

    PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT
  • Parents are required to attend meetings. This makes parents aware of what is being taught (especially safety rules) so they can reinforce it when helping their child. The presence of more adults at meetings should also improve safety.
  • Please discuss any concerns about parental involvement policy with an advisor.

    BEHAVIOR STANDARDS
  • Members are expected to treat advisors and all other members with respect. No harassment or bullying of any type will be tolerated.
  • No foul or offensive language or gestures by members or adults will be tolerated.
  • In accordance with 4-H guidelines, the use of tobacco, drugs, or alcohol will not be permitted at any 4-H events.

    CLUB REQUIREMENTS
Members are expected to work towards the completion of a 4-H project. If you have any questions or need assistance with projects, please discuss this with an advisor. If your child is only interested in target shooting and does not intend to complete a 4-H project, this is not the club for you. There are gun clubs and shooting ranges in the area which provide opportunities for this level of involvement.
  • American Traditions members are required to present a short (3-6 minutes) demonstration to club members as part of their project. More than one demonstration is permissible, but only as time allows. Members should prepare for the demonstration and consult the appropriate 4-H documents/materials for suggestions. Demonstrations should include an introduction, body, and conclusion. Simple reiterations of rules, lists, etc. are discouraged.
  • Membership dues for each member are $15.00 per year. This helps defray the cost of supplies, insurance, fair entrance fees, and county participation fee. Dues do not cover the cost of project books.

    Required Paperwork
  • The county 4-H office requires that all paperwork be submitted to them by early April. American Traditions will establish an appropriate deadline for club members to submit their paperwork to the club organizational advisor so the club can meet the county deadline. Failure to meet this deadline will result in the child(ren) being eliminated from the club. This is a firm rule and is not negotiable due to insurance and liability considerations.
  • Permission Forms & Health forms are required for participation in any shooting sports projects. These forms must be turned in to the organizational advisor who will have them onsite during all shooting sports activities. Failure to complete and turn in these forms will prohibit the member from participating in any shooting sports activity.
