(1875 - 1947) American-born Arthur Brown played a major role as a critic of evolution in the 1920’s and 1930’s. He left a lucrative surgical practice as a practicing physician in Vancouver, British Columbia, in 1925 to devote his time and effort to lecturing on the Bible and science. Dr. Brown argued against evolution on scriptural as well as scientific grounds. Enormously popular in the United States with his national audiences, he was seen by his adversaries as well educated, gracious, and a master of the lecture stage. As most of his contemporaries during the early part of the century, he accepted the notion of an ancient earth. Dr. Brown’s writing focused mainly on many examples of deficiencies in evolutionist arguments, but affirmed the complete compliance of scripture with scientific fact. He died in an auto accident in 1947. Bob & Cecilia Brown Colin Brown (1949 - ) Mr. Brown is a British Creationist residing in Golborne, Warrington, England. He has used many of Charles Darwin’s scientific possessions at Down House when he was younger including his microscope. His real interest in creation began in 1970. Brown has suggested that the manner in which amino acids are coded and arranged into families ensures that some changes will produce the same amino acid or symmetric change, while others (via mutation) will produce a variation within the family group to which it belongs. Any change which takes the amino acid outside the family, will either be returned to its original state by means of the life forms repair systems or if not harmful and allowed to remain could produce a broader expression. This he has termed “Symmetric Variation” and is the central reason why life forms remain within their kinds. Colin believes that the Genesis “kind” is a broad plan that not only consists of the phenotype, but also the life forms genetic potential. He also believes that the shared features between distinct kinds (both living and extinct forms) is either the result of them being originally created with all the shared features or that some of them came about by the life forms own genetic potential. In the fossil record, support for this view is seen when the fossils are either, living at the same time, too close together, too far apart, or in the wrong order and this he has termed the gene-theme model. Gerald Brown Ph.D. ![]() Dr. Gerald Brown has a Bachelor’s Degree (1982) in Electrical Engineering and Management, a Master’s Degree (1984) in Engineering and a Ph.D. (1989) in Electrical Engineering/Power Electronics all from McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Olen R. Brown Ph.D. (August 18, 1935 - ) Dr. Olen Brown is Professor of Biochemistry and investigator at the Dalton Research Center at the University of Missouri at Columbia. He was born in Hastings, Oklahoma. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Laboratory Technology in 1958 and in 1960 his Master of Science Degree in Bacteriology both from the University of Oklahoma, Norman. He also has a Ph.D. in Microbiology (collateral study, Biochemistry) from the University of Oklahoma, Norman, received in 1964. Brown has a License from the Diplomate American Board of Toxicology. Dr. Brown has served since the mid-eighties as a consultant, expert witness and grant peer reviewer for attorneys in Missouri, Kansas, Illinois, Texas, and Oklahoma, and Arkansas; and for government agencies and companies. He has consulted on more than four- dozen legal cases, about half for the plaintiff and half for the defense in both civil and criminal matters. Brown has given approximately sixteen depositions and about a dozen trial testimonies in the broad area of the life sciences. His expertise is in toxicology, microbiology, biochemistry and environmental issues. The central focus of his research has been, and continues to be, oxygen free radicals, including cellular sites and biochemical mechanisms of oxidant-stress damage; mechanisms of adaptation to extreme environments and exercise stress; toxicity of and defenses (including superoxide dismutase) against oxygen, free radicals and redox-active chemicals including xenobiotics, herbicides, pesticides and pharmaceuticals; and free radicals in relation to hyperbaric oxygen-induced convulsions and degenerative brain disorders. Dr. Brown also has continuing interests in the mechanisms of infectious disease, toxicity of and contamination by environmental chemicals, and analysis of odor. He has testified regarding alleged poisonings, cancer and other diseases from chemical exposure to human and animals. This basic research has applications for understanding the mechanisms of action of drugs and other chemicals; cellular respiration, exercise physiology, oxygen therapy and deep-water diving; infectious and inflammatory process; oxidant-stress mechanisms and defenses; identification of and poisoning by environmental chemicals and measurement of odor; cardiac re-perfusion injury and plague formation; aging and traumatic and degenerative brain disorders including stroke, Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease, inflammatory brain disorders, and hyperbaric oxygen poisoning including convulsions. Scientists under Brown’s direction have discovered that specific enzymes including dihydroxyacid dehydratase and asparagines synthetase (of branched-chain amino acid and asparagines biosynthesis, respectively), and protein A of the quinolinate synthetase complex, 3-hydroxyanthranilate oxidase and indole amine oxidase (superoxygenase), and kynurenine hydroxylase of NAD biosynthesis and the kynurenine pathway are oxidant-sensitive while most enzymes are not; that oxidant stress induces expression of genetic stringency in sensitive bacteria; that nitrofurans and other redox-active compounds kill human malarial parasites in vitro; and that CO2 deprivation is lethal for various facultative microbes. They have developed (with others) the thesis that control of the concentration, chelation and oxidation states of iron in cells is a fundamental defense against oxidant-stress; devised a test to measure the oxidant-stress capability of drugs and environmental and food chemicals; and developed the theory that convulsions from hyperbaric oxygen, and certain degenerative brain pathologies, are caused by specific disturbances in the kynurenine pathway that generate excess amounts of quinolinate, an NMDA receptor agonist and excitotoxin. They also have devised and applied techniques for assessing odor from lagoons and other environmental sources. From 1958 to 1962 Dr. Brown was appointed as a Research Assistant at the University of Oklahoma in Norman, from 1960 to 1962 he was appointed Teaching Assistant there and Special Instructor from 1963 to 1964.
