Arthur Stanley Eddington (December 28, 1882 - November 22, 1944) ![]() Arthur Stanley Eddington was born in Kendal, Westmorland, England of Quaker parents. His father had passed away before he was two years old and the family moved to Weston-super-Mare. There he attended school and was awarded a scholarship for three years by Somerset County (Weston-super-Mare is now in Avon but it was then in Somerset) as Arthur was a brilliant scholar. Eddington attended Owens College, Manchester from 1898 to 1902. There he studied physics and mathematics, being greatly influenced by one of his mathematical lecturers, Horace Lamb. Eddington was awarded a year mathematics scholarship to study at Cambridge where he was taught by E.W. Barnes, E.T. Whittaker, and A.N. Whitehead. He became Senior Wrangler in 1904. His first position after graduating from Cambridge University in 1905 was that of chief assistant to the Astronomer Royal at the Royal Greenwich Observatory, where he excelled in practical astronomy. Eddington became Smith's prizewinner and was awarded a Trinity College fellowship in 1907. In 1913 he was appointed to Plumian Professor of Astronomy at Cambridge, and a year later, in 1914, he was made director of the Cambridge Observatory. In the same year he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society. Eddington came from a Quaker tradition and, as a conscientious objector, he avoided active war service and was able to continue his research at Cambridge during the war years of 1914 to 1918. During those years he was led to important discoveries covering a wide range of problems. Eddington was the first to model the interior of a star under radiative equilibrium, pointing out that the condition for stellar equilibrium involved three forces: gravity, gas pressure, and radiation pressure. Recognizing the importance of ionization in stellar interiors, he hypothesized that because of the high ionization of internal gases, the perfect-gas condition prevailed within the interiors of stars, except for white dwarfs. This hypothesis was accepted later. He demonstrated that energy could be transported by radiation as well as by convection, and that the centers of stars must be at extremely high temperatures - in the millions of degrees. In 1919 Eddington organized a solar-eclipse expedition to Brazil and Principe Island in West Africa to photograph the stars in the neighborhood of the eclipsed Sun. This was to test whether or not stars seen adjacent to the Sun's limb would appear to have shifted away from the Sun and their normal position relative to each other, as predicted by Einstein's general theory of relativity. Although difficult to measure, the observed shift in position roughly agreed with Einstein's predicted value - the first observational test of general relativity. Eddington's efforts in attempting to verify Einstein's theory of general relativity continued into the 1920's. Through his popular writings and his book Mathematical Theory of Relativity (1923), Eddington captured the intellectual imagination of his generation. Of this book, Einstein said that it was the finest presentation of the subject in any language. In 1924 Eddington was awarded the ASP Bruce Medal. In 1926 he was honored as Royal Society Bakerian lecturer. Eddington received many honors, including honorary degrees from 12 universities. He was president of the Royal Astronomical Society (1921-23), the Physical Society (1930-32), the Mathematical Association (1932), and the International Astronomical Union (1938-44). He was knighted in 1930 and received the Order of Merit in 1938. Meetings of the Royal Astronomical Society were often enlivened by dramatic clashes between Eddington and Sir James Hopwood Jeans or Edward Arthur Milne over the validity of scientific assumptions and mathematical procedures. In addition to his work in relativity theory, he also did important work on the internal structure of stars. He was the first to calculate the diameter of Red giant Stars, including Betelgeuse. An extremely important result that emerged from his research was his theoretical formulation of the mass-luminosity relation, verified later by stellar data. He calculated the abundance of hydrogen and he produced a theory to explain the pulsation of Cepheid variable stars. Eddington published much of his research in 1926 in the important work The Internal Constitution of Stars. Eddington was honored with a Royal Society Royal Medal in 1928. In that same year he published The Nature of the Physical World (1928), and the years that followed, many philosophical books included Science and the Unseen World (1929) and New Pathways of Science (1935). Eddington suspected that the main source of stellar energy was subatomic and that hydrogen played a major role in supplying this energy. Later, in 1938 and 1939, Bethe introduced the theory for the fusion of hydrogen into helium, which clarified the picture of stellar energy generation and substantiated his speculations. In 1939 he published The Philosophy of Physical Science. Eddington's view of the importance of history of a subject comes over in these works. In his later years, Eddington became convinced that the fundamental constants of nature, such as the mass of the proton and the charge of the electron, were a natural and complete specification for constructing a universe and that their values were not accidental. He did not complete this line of research before his death in 1944 in Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England, and his book entitled Fundamental Theory (1946) was published posthumously. Jeanne Erickson Ph.D. (1949 - ) Jeanne Erickson is Research Associate Professor in the Plant Microbiology & Pathology and Biochemistry Department at the University of Missouri, Columbia, Missouri. Her research there focuses on the assembly, structure and function of the Photosystem II (PSII) reaction center. PSII is comprised of more than twenty polypeptides plus associated pigments and metal ions. This thylakoid membrane protein-pigment complex catalyzes the photo-oxidation of water to molecular oxygen, releasing hydrogen ions and electrons for the photosynthetic electron transfer chain. Two chloroplast-encoded polypeptides, D1 and D2, are central to PSII structure and function. D1 has the highest turnover rate of all PSII proteins, and appears to be damaged as a consequence of its role in electron transfer. Photo-inhibition and reduced photosynthetic yield are correlated with D1 damage. Genetic engineering of the Chloroplast D1 gene, psbA, in the unicellular green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii allows her and her research team to investigate the relationship between D1 structure and consequent function. Fluorescence screening of algal transformants generated after site-directed and random-targeted mutagenesis of psbA identifies mutants with altered PSII phenotype. They have used this approach to study ligands to the manganese cluster ess. She was born in South Dakota in 1949. Erickson did her undergraduate studies (Bachelor of Arts Degree) in French at Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. She received a Master of Science Degree in Microbiology and Immunology at Ohio State University. After teaching at Kent State University in Ohio and doing research at the University of California, San Diego, Erickson earned a Master of Science Degree and her Ph.D. both in Human Genetics at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan. Everest Ph.D. Graham Everest is Professor of Mathematics at the University of East Anglia in Norwich, England. Professor Everest divides his time at the University of East Anglia between giving lectures to undergraduates and doing research in mathematics. His main area of research interest is in number theory (particularly in the arithmetic of Elliptic Curves, Interactions between Number Theory and Dynamical Systems, Diophantine Equations, and Computational Number Theory, especially the appearance of primes in classical integer sequences which satisfy recurrence relations. Professor Everest has been trying to interpret the known properties of the canonical height for rational points on elliptic curves in terms of dynamical systems. This is a flourishing area of research of over-lap between arithmetic and dynamical systems. The methods needed to develop elliptic dynamical systems took him into the dynamics of iterates of rational maps. His method shed some light on the connections between heights and the structure of periodic points in that setting. Everest is particularly interested in the astronomy of the equations of the distribution of solutions of Decomposable Form Equations. That is, contemplating solutions as stars in the night sky, what constellations are visible from the earth? Les Ey Les Ey has worked as a relational database and applications programmer (Delphi) since 1995.
