Marcel-Paul Schutzenberger (1920 - 1996)

Schutzenberger was a remarkable figure in the intellectual life of the late twentieth century. Within the community of mathematicians, he is well known for his fundamental and prophetic contributions to combinatorics, automata and coding theory, mathematical linguistics, the theory of noncommunicative semigroups, and many areas of algebra. His most recent mathematical work is relevant to the theory of quantum groups.

A man of endless curiosity, Schutzenberger was the first scientist of his stature publicly to question Darwin's theory of evolution, raising questions at the Wistar Symposium of 1967 about life and chance that biologists didn't understand and that mathematicians couldn't answer. His criticisms were remarkable both for their subtlety and for the courage required to make them.

In an interview published shortly before he died, Schutzenberger expanded upon his views, arguing with characteristic force and wit that while the mechanism of random variation and natural selection is credited with almost everything, it explains almost nothing; the theory's claims neatly canceled by its failures. Those who knew him remember him as a man of wit and penetrating intelligence. They remember a man of uncommon forbearance and personal dignity. His mathematical work will preserve his memory. His criticism of Darwin's theory of evolution will preserve his spirit.

From 2001-2007, Dr. Sternberg served as a staff scientist at the National Center for Biotechnology Information, and from 2001-2007 he was a Research Associate at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History. Sternberg is presently a research scientist at the Biologic Institute, supported by a research fellowship from the Center for Science and Culture at Discovery Institute. He is also a Research Collaborator at the National Museum of Natural History.

From 2001-2004, Dr. Sternberg served as Managing Editor of the Proceedings of the Biological Society of Washington, and he has served on the Editorial Board of the International Journal of General Systems. In 1999, he was a Visiting Associate Professor of Biology at Northern Michigan University, and from 1999-2001 was a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Invertebrate Zoology, National Museum of Natural History. He has received postdoctoral fellowships from both the NIH and the National Museum of Natural History, and he has published refereed articles in such journals as Genetica, Evolutionary Theory, Journal of Comparative Biology, Crustacean Research, Journal of Natural History, Journal of Morphology, Journal of Biological Systems, and the Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences.

Dr. Sternberg thinks that neo-Darwinian theory is at best a very limited framework for understanding the development, organization, and disparity of fossil and recent taxa, as it formally pertains to the fixation and loss of gene variants in populations. Evolutionary genetics leaves open the central issue of how the one dimensional genotype can specify the four dimensional phenotype. The approach he is taking to this problem is a variant of structural realism, by which he means that biological phenomena are manifestations of logico-mathematical structures. This perspective is orthogonal to the origins debate, if you will, because all historical actualities are understood to be space-time instances of pre-existing non-temporal possibilities. Within this context one can accept all that is empirically valid in evolutionary biology, while not axiomatically dismissing the position that structures as well as their “real” instantiations have an intelligent cause. His position asserts that the cosmos is fundamentally intelligible in such a way that it can be logically, mathematically, and scientifically recognized to be such; and moreover--following Proclus--that the universe emanates from Nous (mind). In this sense his thinking is compatible with intelligent design broadly defined.

He was an aerospace engineer with the General Electric Company and was involved for thirty years with research and development of automatic flight control systems (auto pilots) for a number of aircraft such as the F-111, Boeing 757 and 762. He developed a solid-state rate gyro that uses a vibrating element for stabilization in flight, similar to the sensor used by a house fly. Sunderland had also built three light aircraft and had designed a wing whereby an airplane could be converted for ground transport in just two minutes so the plane could be trailered for home storage like a boat.

Sunderland authored many published articles and papers on aviation and held a number of patents in his field. As an avocation he spent over twenty years intensively studying the scientific evidence relating to theories on origins.
