Village News/Notes WE need Volunteers to help with: Our next Traveling Exhibit is set to open in April. It is called Capture the Moment and is a tremendous display of Pulitzer Prize winning photographs. I will send more out on that exhibit as I receive it. Our History Activity Tables will pick up this theme during its run here. Hello All, Once again I am filling your in box with great things from OHS. I just wanted to remind you of some up-coming events and a few new ones. Please let me know ASAP if you are willing and able to help with any of these events. Your support of our programs is what makes them great! New-Saturday, April 12 - it is Spring cleaning day in Ohio Village. We need to get some of the village buildings spruced up for up coming events and school programs. We will all gather at the Town Hall at 10 am to get started. Robin Hewitt-Schuricht will oversee this day of toil, since I will be in another part of the village with 40 Girl Scouts doing a cooking workshop (if you see lots of smoke, bring your cleaning water over!). Since you will work up an enormous appetite from all the cleaning we will have to break for lunch. We will provide you all with Fried Chicken and beverages and ask that you bring a dish to share. After lunch we will continue with cleaning until 2 pm.. To cap the day off, all are invited to the season opener of the Ohio Village Muffins at 2 pm at the village base ball field. Wear your cleaning clothes, bring a tasty dish, watch a 19th century baseball game and help beautify the Ohio Village at the same time. We also need some volunteers to help with the farm house garden. We will be working on that at the same time. Fantastically Fun Wednesdays 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. June 11, 18, & 25 and July 2, 9, 16 & 23 These fun programs are geared for families and day care groups. Each date has a theme, such as nature, toys and games from the past, First Ohioans, etc. - we do crafts, hands-on activities, games, storytelling, and more. We usually hold this program outside in the area between the Center and Ohio Village. I need at least 4-5 volunteers per day to assist with all the activities. Girl Scout Day in Ohio Village - Sunday, April 27, 2008 1-5 pm. I took a preexisting event (Spring Fever/Oh Those Victorians) which had low general attendance and reworked it for a new audience - Girl Scouts and their families. So those of you who had volunteered for Spring Fever the last couple of years - we will be doing similar events and activities such as 19th century calisthenics, making health foods of the time - graham crackers, tasting switchel (19th century Gatorade), making Victorian hats out of paper, base ball game with the Ohio Village Muffins, dancing the Maypole, dancing to period dances - in other words - lots of fun. We have over 150 scouts registered at the moment. I have scheduled a training session for the event - Thursday evening at 6 pm. on April 17 (In the Village - American House Hotel) and on Saturday morning, April 19 in the Village Town Hall - 9:00 am (Notice the time change on this one. There is a volunteer appreciation brunch in the center at 11 am so I want you all to be able to attend - if you need more details on that and wish to attend the brunch please contact Mary Cannon at mcannon@ohiohistory.org or call 614. 297.2392 ASAP. ) Boy Scouts of America Day in Ohio Village - Sunday, May 18 1-5 pm Not to leave the Boy Scouts out, they are having their own special day as well. The theme for this day is 1860s everyday life and the Civil War. I have several reenactors coming in to do drills, rifle demonstrations, recruiting, cannon firing, etc. with the scouts and their families. We even have a special 1860s Topographic reenactment group coming in with period equipment. I have one training date scheduled at this time - Saturday, May 10 at 9 am in the Ohio Village Town Hall. Just a note on this event - at the same time as our event is going on, the Crew Stadium is hosting Rock on the Range - a 2 day rock concert. There may be some traffic issues, so make sure you leave your home a little early in order to here on time. Capture the Moment: The Pulitzer Prize Photographs- A new traveling exhibit that opens at the center on April 25. "The exhibition shows us with stunning clarity what it means to be human. The pictures draw us in and connect us emotionally to the people whose stories have defined our time. Each of the photographs, reproduced for this exhibition in large format, won a Pulitzer Prize between 1942 and 2007: Babe Ruth's last day as a Yankee, the flag raising at Iwo Jima, the student-National Guard conflict at Kent State, the World Trade Center attack. These powerful images have changed lives and the way we think. They're likely to change you too." We would like to station volunteers within the exhibit to interact with our guests. Some of these photographs evoke strong emotions from viewers, so we ask that volunteers be over 18 for this role. We are having 2 training sessions in the exhibit with its curator, Cyma Rubin. Those are Wednesday, April 23 at 6 pm and Thursday, April 24 at 1 pm. [ This event might not be suitable for those under 18. Please check with parents.) Along with this exhibit, OHS is creating its own exhibit on Kent State. On Thursday, May 15 (6-8:30 pm) we are hosting an event entitled "It Happened in Ohio: Reflections on Kent State." This is a facilitated panel discussion on the Kent State Massacre, including Alan Canfora, Director of the May 4 Center and a student who was wounded that day, the National Guard Commander at Kent State on May 4, and others who were on the campus at the time. I will need help with greeting visitors, serving refreshments, etc. The Glorious Fourth: Independence Day in Ohio Village - July 4 Noon-5 pm Once again we will hold our Independence Day celebration in the Ohio Village on July 4th from noon-5 pm. We have processions, speeches, greased-pole climbing contest, music, pie eating contest, a base ball game with the Ohio Village Muffins, games and plenty of activities. We will also be giving out samples of ice cream in several buildings, and everyone will get to make their own sundae. Lots of fun and ice cream for everyone! I need at least 25 volunteers for this event, so come celebrate the holiday with us! The training sessions are June 19 at 6 pm in the American House Hotel in the village, and Saturday, June 28 at 9 am in the Village. Summer Camps in June and July We will be hosting week long summer camps in the Ohio Village. The full listing can be found on our web page www.ohiohistory.org. We will have several programs running at the same time. Look over the list on the web and if you see something that interests you, please let me know. Other needs: Robin Hewitt-Schuricht, Education Specialist, needs help during April and May with School programs in the village. This is a high visitation season with up to 500 students per day. If you are available to volunteer during the week, please let me know and I will pass your name to Robin. Another event I need some help with is on June 21. The Masons are having a large picnic in the village and I need some volunteers to help me with outdoor games in the afternoon. Please let me know if you can help with these events. I can't do it without your help and I truly appreciate your support.
