Get all the Facts About Strabimus

Strabismus, commonly called the wandering eye or crossed eyes, occurs in about 5% of children. Children's eyes (one or both) may turn inward, outward, up or down. This misalignment of the eye may cause children to have double-vision. It is caused by a lack of co-ordination between the eyes, causing the eyes to point in different directions. Since the eyes are looking in different directions, the brain recieves two images. Children with this condition learn to shut out the "bad" eye and just focus with their good eye, which prevents them from seeing double. This can be an advantage, but at the same time the child can lose depth perception or their ability to judge distances.

Causes

The major cause of Strabismus is the failure of a person's eye muscles to work together. This lack of coordination in the eyes is what causes eyes to move in different directions. If your child is farsighted there could be a very high risk that they could develop Strabismus. When someone is farsighted they have trouble focusing on objects that are close. A child's eyes who is farsighted and also has a condition os strabismus will turn inward when focusing on a close object.

A child's family history is also a known factor of developing strabismus, but an actual inheridted cause hasn't yet been identified.

About the Author

Well, that is the end of my site. I hope you now are a little more informed about Strabismus. If you think you might have this condition or your children are experiencing symptoms get it checked out right away. I say all of this with experience, because I myself have Strabismus. I have worn glasses since I was five years old, and I will have to continue wearing them all my life. I really didn't know what I had until about a year ago, when I became interested in this topic. All my life I have used one eye(my right eye) for seeing objects, because my brain has basically shut off the images in my left eye(which is the eye that crosses when I focus on close objects). I can notice the crossing of my eyes when I don't wear my glasses or have my contacts in. However, when I wear contacts you would never know that I suffer from Strabismus.
