Dayton Area Adoption Support Group

Posted by: "Valerie Rieben" on Wed Jan 14, 2009

Hello All,
I just wanted to let everyone know that I have started a Dayton Area Adoption Support Group. The group is intended for both adoptive and prospective adoptive parents in the Dayton area and includes those who have adopted or are in the process of adopting, internationally and domestically. I am just getting this group off the ground but am hoping to have regularly scheduled "meetings" as well as playdates, cultural events, etc. If you are in Dayton or any of the surrounding areas or know anyone who is, I hope that you will join us!

Play Group

I (Ginny Wells) recently started a small group through Families with Children from China.
We meet at the McDonald's in Tipp City, Ohio (about 10 miles north of Dayton) on the first Friday of every month from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The kids love playing in the playplace and the moms enjoy the fellowship.
Please feel free to contact me at (937) 339-5685 or shalom1972@verizon.net if you have questions.

Father Frost party in Tipp City
FATHER FROST PARTY: Sunday afternoon, January 4th from 3 until 5 p.m. at the Tipp City United Methodist Church.

The church is located in old downtown Tipp City, about 8 miles north of the I-70/I-75 exchange and a little less than one mile east on St. Rt. 571 off of I-75 Exit 68. Everyone is welcome. We are hoping to have both Eastern European exchange students and EE nationals join us, hopefully of interest for older adoptees; there will be activities for the younger set.

Please extend this invitation to your circle of friends, if you know someone who would enjoy performing at this event, let us know. If you have questions they may contact Susan Walters.

FRUA will provide drinks and paper goods. Please bring a snack to share. Reservations are not necessary, but we would like an approximate head count of children who would like to receive a small gift from Father Frost; if yours is among those, please RSVP to one of the above contacts.

Mom's Night Out
Please join us for a GREAT Mom's Night Out on Saturday, October 18, in Troy, Ohio.

Here are details:
(1) OPTIONAL DVD on Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD) by Nancy Thomas. This seventy-minute interview with Thomas is humorous, enlightening, and highly informative. Thomas is both a parent of RAD children and authority on this subject. Reference her website at www.attachment.org
The DVD will be shown at 3:30 p.m. (on October 18) at the conference room of the Troy Library located at 419 W. Main Street, Troy.
Know, however, that you do not need to discuss RAD or anything like that at the next stop which is Panera Bread in Troy. :)

(2) Meal, coffee, or dessert at scrumptious Panera Bread located directly in front of Meijer's in Troy (1900 W. Main Street) starting at 5 p.m. I will be also inviting other adoptive moms of children from Children's Services, FRUA, and China to join us. So hopefully this evening will be one of encouragement and value in our understanding of children and ourselves, as well as a relief and a whole lot of fun!

Please R.S.V.P. to Ginny at shalom1972 @ verizon.net (remove spaces) by October 17. In your R.S.V.P., let me know if you plan to attend the DVD session only, the meal only, or do both. Thank you.
