My official registered charter name means exactly that. The first requirement for being a chapter member is to have a fun attitude. This chapters goal is to only to have interested ladies involved that want to spend time together and enjoy red hatting, friendship and sisterhood. Each member should want the enjoyment and camaraderie of belonging to a wonderful, pro-woman organization. After realizing how much fun a girl could have belonging to the Red Hat Society, I became a member in a local chapter and then decided to break away and founded my own chapter in September 2004.

Wearing red hats and purple clothes is the official “uniform” for all events unless otherwise designated by the Queen. The color red symbolizes happiness. If you don’t want to wear a red hat than you really don’t want to become a red hatter.

At least once a year, each individual Fun Attitude member must take sole responsibility for signing up for an activity. Activities may include picnics, lunches, brunches, dinners, day trips, places of interest- anything that would be fun and interesting. The hostess for the month will determine the location, date and time of that month’s event including the price of gas per rider if event is over 15 miles away from our chapters home base at the corner of E. Market and Rt 46. (Howland Corners). Minimum charge per rider will be $5.00. Car pools will be divided by number of members needing a ride to the event so that the drivers gas reimbursement will be fair and equal. Each driver is required to have at least one member in it with a cell phone. News of the events will be communicated to members via email in most cases. Members who have email will deliver information to e-mail-less members whom they see regularly. Members who do not have email will supply Queen Judie with self addressed stamped envelopes to receive broadcasts if no other form of communication is available. The chapter is closed and is limited to a maximum of 15 or less members. Members will be dropped from the roster who miss 3 consecutive activities/events in a row without contacting the Queen. This policy will be administered with discretion so that if members stay in touch, confirm a continuing interest in Fun Attitudes, and have a good reason for missing an event, they will remain in good standing. We are looking for courtesy and consideration with our members. We realize that everyone cannot necessarily make every activity that is planned. This is meant to be a “fun” group and not “one more thing to dread”. So having said this, we all agree to RSVP promptly to each activity in a timely manner.

Guests at Fun Attitude Events:
Members may bring guests to Fun Attitude events with the permission of the Queen or the hostess of the month. There may be occasions when the size of the group must be limited so the hostess must be contacted before a guest is invited. It is the responsibility of the member bringing the guest to explain to her that she will not be able to join the Fun Attitudes since our chapter is closed. Occasional openings may be filled with friends of members but contact Queen Judie to determine whether or not there are openings. A guest may only attend three events in one year no matter who brings that guest. In other words, a guest may not come three times as one members guest and three more times as another members guest. Since our chapter began in September, Fun Attitudes year runs from September of one year to the end of August of the next year. In the event that there is an opening, a prospective member must attend three events before being considered for membership. After that she and Queen Judie will review these guidelines and determine whether or not she and the Fun Attitudes are a good match.

Also required is a Fun Attitudes roster
with the list of cell phone numbers
to be in their purse or glove compartment.

"We will only wait maximum of 15 minutes
when we are going on an outing!"
So, please be on time!

IT'S ALL ABOUT FUN

Red Hat Society

While visiting a friend in Tucson several years ago, Sue Ellen impulsively bought a bright red fedora at a thrift shop, for no other reason than that it was cheap and, she thought, quite dashing. A year or two later she read the poem "Warning" by Jenny Joseph, which depicts an older woman in purple clothing with a red hat. Sue Ellen felt an immediate kinship with Ms. Joseph. She decided that her birthday gift to her dear friend, Linda Murphy, would be a vintage red hat and a copy of the poem. She has always enjoyed whimsical decorating ideas, so she thought the hat would look nice hanging on a hook next to the framed poem. Linda got so much enjoyment out of the hat and the poem that Sue Ellen gave the same gift to another friend, then another, then another.
One day it occurred to these friends that they were becoming a sort of "Red Hat Society" and that perhaps they should go out to tea... in full regalia. They decided they would find purple dresses which didn't go with their red hats to complete the poem's image.

The tea was a smashing success.

Soon, each of them thought of another woman or two she wanted to include, and they bought more red hats. Their group swelled to 18, and they began to encourage other interested people to start their own chapters (18 women don't fit well around a tea table). One of their members passed along the idea to a friend of hers in Florida, and their first "sibling" group was born.

Sue Ellen's fondest hope is that these societies will
proliferate far and wide. We have now held three successful Red Hat Society conventions — entire hotels filled with women of a certain age wearing red hats and purple outfits! Could world domination be far behind?

Red Hat Society Prayer

Loving Creator,
In your extravagance you have painted
the world with bold strokes and gloried in our differences.
When colors proclaim our uniqueness,
let our little eccentricities be expressions of our joy for living.
When our time together looks like a costume party,
let our gatherings be a time of genuine community.
Out of the abundance of your grace,
you have set before us only a small portion of your gifts:
time
color
food
and compassion.
Bless our time.
Bless our joyful celebration of creative life.
And bless both the food we share
and those who labored so we might enjoy it.
Most of all, use us:
our flamboyance, our joy and our sharing
that we may be a blessing to all we meet.
Amen.
