The Murphy Group squeaks by in the seventh inning

On June 20, The Murphy Group, led by Reese Thompson, scored 4 runs in the top of the seventh to break the tie in a see-saw game. Granville Lumber could not score in the bottom of the seventh and lost 10-6. Kevin Cramer played another solid game batting two for four with four stolen bases. Patrick Westmoreland had two hits, three stolen bases, and one RBI. Corey Ross had two hits and three stolen bases. Trent Kozman had a home run. A poll taken in the grandstands showed the fans were glad to see Granville Lumber hitting the ball again. It was an exciting game for fans and players for both teams!

Dry spell continues in dusty game against Medical Benefits

On June 18, Medical Benefits played a strong game both offensively and defensively soundly defeating Granville Lumber 17-2. Medical Benefits was creating so much dust running the bases that the field looked like a cloud most of the evening. Kevin Cramer played an outstanding defensive game in left field catching three fly balls during the game. Trent Kozman batted two for three and Cory Hartfield had three stolen bases including one at home. Scott Tallman finished off the game pitching against the hot bats of Medical Benefits.

Lumber ends offensive slump as Park squeaks by 6-5

On June 13, after 26 consecutive innings scoring 1 or less runs, Granville Lumber broke out of the slump with 3 runs in the third inning! Park National played an outstanding game defensively tagging out two Granville Lumber near scores in close calls at home plate that made up the difference between a win and a loss. Cory Ross led Granville Lumber's offense batting three for three with three stolen bases. Jeremiah Samples was responsible for breaking the slump with two RBIs in an outstanding game batting two for three including two doubles and three stolen bases. Kevin Heroff and Trent Kozman also batted two for three in this game. The team's record drops to 7-5. The coaching staff was encouraged with the improvement in the offense today..

Safe!

Offensive drought continues as Taylor Drug hands Lumber 9-2 loss

On June 11, Granville Lumber extended the number of innings scoring 1 or less runs to 24 straight! The defense had some outstanding plays again as Andrew, Scottie, and Jon turned the third double play of the season while Kevin Haroff made the best outfield catch of the season in left field. Trent Kozman was two for three at the plate and Cory Hartfield stole 5 bases despite his foot injury. John Beringer (minor league player) played his second game with Granville Lumber filling in for vacationing Kevin Cramer and Patrick Westmoreland. The team's record drops to 7-4.

Granville Lumber Offensive Slump leads to third loss in a row

On June 9, Owens Corning defeated Granville Lumber 3-1 in a defensive battle. Lumber has not been able to generate the offense in the last three games scoring only 4 runs in 3 games. Thomas Vance and Kevin Herroff both had 3 stolen bases. Thomas' steal of home led to Granville Lumber's only score for this game. Andrew Wagner and Trent Kozman shared the mound combining for ten strike outs.

Rain holds off as the Murphy Group stings Granville Lumber 11-1

On June 4, The Murphy Group brought the bats and the defense to a well executed game and would not let Granville Lumber up until they said "uncle". The Murphy Group jumped out to a 6-0 lead quickly after two innings. Granville Lumber seemed to get the game under control defensively for a while but the Murphey Group struck out 12 batters, and had some outstanding fielding holding Granville Lumber to only four hits for the game. The loss takes Lumber's record down to 7-2. Kevin Cramer, Trent Kozman, and Cory Hartfield were the only players to get on base swinging the bat today.

Pitcher's revenge!

On May 30, it was David Freeman's (Medical Benefits) day when he pitched a 15 strike out game against Granville Lumber leading to Granville Lumber's first loss of the season 5-2. Granville Lumber played very well defensively with their second double play of the season and an exceptional fielding day for Andrew Wagner. Offensively, it was a tough day with Andrew and Trent Kozman as the only individuals who were able to get on base swinging the bat. Andrew also led the team in stolen bases with 4 steals. Cory Ross had 3 steals including one steal at home to give Granville Lumber their first run.

As a tribute to the team, they never quit. It looked like they might be able to generate a rally in the bottom of the sixth, but the batters could not connect with the ball and Medical Benefits went away with the win. This matchup is sizing up to be a great rivalry for this season.

Team performance leads to 13-10 win over Park National

On May 28, the entire team contributed in a solid performance over the team that nearly gave them their first lost earlier this season. The make up inning was postponed until the June 13 matchup between these two teams.

Action vs. Park National Bank

Owens Corning gives undefeated Granville Lumber a scare

Corey Ross had a good game at the plate with a double in the bottom of the fifth inning for two RBIs to take the lead back from Owens Corning. Owens Corning kept an exciting game exciting by tieing the game in the top of the sixth. Scottie Tallman drove in Kevin Heroff for the winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Trent Kozman pitched the game with 10 strike outs.

Good Sportsmanship Award!

John Brockman of the Taylor Drug team deserves a special "Good Sportsmanship Award." John beaned Trent Kaiser in the second Taylor Drug game and apologized to Trent the next day at school. Sometimes players that get hit think that the pitcher was trying to hit them. This shows that the pitchers feel just as bad about it as the person who was hit. Let's give John credit for being a good sport.

Granville Lumber "bat"tles back to defeat Taylor Drug 19-13

On May 23, the rain stopped long enough to play a baseball game. Going into the bottom of the 3rd, Taylor Drug had jumped out to an 8-1 lead. Granville Lumber proceeded to live up to their cheer 'never quit' by batting through the order and scoring 10 runs! This is the most productive batting inning the team has seen all season! John Brockman (Taylor Drug pitcher)was having an outstanding day with eight strikeouts in the bottom of the third when he beaned Trent Kaiser knocking him out for the rest of the game - the team doctor has not been available for comment, but Kaiser's parents indicate that he will be ready to play on Saturday. The pitching game fell apart for Brockman after that and Granville Lumber just kept driving in the runs the rest of the game. Taylor Drug had a nice rally in the top of the sixth, but it was not enough to close the gap. Corey Hartfield hit four for five at bats with a home run, three RBIs, and two stolen bases. Trent Kozman was five for five, with a home run, two doubles, eight RBIs, and a great day fielding with three outstanding throws to first and one to home. Patrick Westmoreland had a good game hitting two of four at bats with two RBIs. Corey Ross had two stolen bases (including one at home). Kevin Heroff hit two for two at bats with two stolen bases. Jeremiah Samples had a solid performance going two for three at the plate with two RBIs and four stolen bases. Coach Kozman summed it up nicely when he said "Now that's a little league game!"

Action vs. Murphy Group

Solid game for Granville Lumber defeats Murphy Group 9-1

On May 19, Granville Lumber played a solid offensive and defensive game defeating the Murphy Group. Andrew Wagner pitched an outstanding game with only four batters hitting, ten strike outs, and fielding the ball to first for three other outs! Cory Hartfield had an outstanding day batting two for three with a triple, a double, three RBIs and three stolen bases (including two steals at home). Trent Kozman was three for three at the plate with a double, a triple, and three RBIs. Thomas Vance picked the Abe's Body Shop sign to aim for and had a solid hit in the hole between right and center (right in front of Abe's sign). The defense played an outstanding game holding the Murphy Group scoreless until the top of the sixth inning. In an interview following the game at the Knucklehead's celebration, Coach Kozman said, "I think the practices before the games are working."

Pitching battle ends in 2-1 win for Granville Lumber

On May 14, Medical Benefits gave Granville Lumber the toughest defensive challenge of the year with Lumber coming out on top. Scott Tallman's hit in the top of the sixth inning brought in the game winning run. This game had a total of 30 strike outs between the two pitchers who both pitched all six innings! Many team moms were expected to be happy because the game finished 30 minutes earlier than expected.

Trent Kozman had an exceptional day pitching, striking out sixteen batters in a single game. In fact, only one batter made it on base swinging the bat - an error on that play made this a no hitter for Trent. Jeremiah Samples also had an excellent game. He was three for three at the plate with five (5) stolen bases. Coach Kozman's batting practice before the game paid off as the bottom of the batting order hit in the winning run!

Granville Lumber ties Park National at end of time limit

On May 9, Granville Lumber faced a tough opponent in Park National. Down 4-0 going into the top of the fifth, Granville Lumber loaded up the bases and Trent Kozman hit a grand slam home run to right field to tie the ballgame. The defense was fired up and held Park National scoreless for the last two innings. As the sun had just set, the umpire called the game. The final inning will be played at 5:30 pm the next time the two teams meet this season. Cory Hartfield and Jeremiah Samples both had two stolen bases. Andrew, Jeremiah, and Trent combined pitching efforts for a total of eleven strikeouts in this outing.

Granville Lumber Defeats Taylor Drug 6-2

On May 7, following the dedication ceremony for Raccoon Valley Park, Granville Lumber's defense went to work holding Taylor Drug to just two runs. Trent Kozman and Andrew Wagner shared the mound striking out ten batters between them. Kozman batted two for three with two hits and two RBIs. Jon Uland led the team in steals with three bases stolen including a score.

Kiwanis Baseball tournament at Camp O'Bannon

The team had their first experience on the field together this week against real competition in the Kiwanis Baseball tournament at Camp O'Bannon in Newark. The coaches placed the players at multiple positions during the tournament. This tournament will help them make decisions on positions as we move into the regular season. We did not win any of the games due to a few innings in which the team let its guard down defensively, but everyone had the opportunity to play and, most importantly, have fun playing baseball together during some great spring weather!
