Kids In Dublin...TOGETHER

Are you an Elementary aged kid who would like to hang out with other kids who are trying to cope with having a parent/family member who is addicted to alcohol/drugs?

- Are you a parent dealing with helping your child not feel like the only child in the world who has a parent/family member struggling with addiction?

COOL…then bring a parent/adult and join us at the Dublin Recreation Center once a month on the last Sunday of each month from 3:00-5:00 to swim, play games, hang out and most importantly fellowship with other families in similar struggles.

Ask for the “Kids in Dublin” support group room at the Rec Center front desk.

Cost: $8/adult $4/child if you will be using the pool facilities (Adults MUST supervise their own child at all times BOTH in the support group meeting room and in the pool area. The support group is for both child and adult together.)

Just hanging out in the support group room is free to all.

Kids in Dublin is a support group for elementary aged children who are coping with a parent/family member who is addicted to alcohol/drugs. Kids In Dublin…TOGETHER provides a fun and safe atmosphere where you and your child can play and feel free to talk with others their own age about the struggles they are facing and just have fun with “someone else who understands” while giving you, their parent, the opportunity to talk to other parents in the same situation.

Kids in Dublin was started by a mom with a 10 year old son who needed to find support for her child amidst the struggles of dealing with addiction in a family member. Many support groups exist for adults, teens, spouses and adult family members but many times, the ones hurt the most are left out. Elementary aged children struggle with significant issues of grief, anger, frustration and loneliness when one of their parents is addicted to alcohol/drugs.

What Can I Expect at the Support Group Meeting?
The first hour of the meeting is a time for getting to know really cool new friends through games, fun art projects and much more. We will also talk about important things during the first hour to help deal with having a family member who is addicted to alcohol/drugs. There will always be time to express feelings and talk about issues that are bothering us. It's important that we not only learn how to cope in the right way to our situation, but to also make cool new friends that understand exactly how we feel. A facilitator from the Dublin Counseling Center will be available at each meeting time during this first hour.

The second hour of the meeting time will be free time where the kids and their parents can play games together(board games provided), go swimming at the indoor pool, play outside at Coffman park, or use any of the other facilities available to the public at the Rec center. Parents will have an opportunity to talk to each other and learn how to support themselves and their children through the difficulties they face.
