|WOMEN'S EQUALITY DAY 2015 |
The Women’s Equality Day - 2015 Committee has announced the plans for the annual celebration to be held on Wednesday, August 26, 2015 at noon at the Women’s Park. This year marks the 95th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment which gave women the right to vote. This year’s keynote presentation will feature “Rally the Votes: A Man’s Perspective””, a dialogue set at Seneca Falls in 1848 between Fredrick Douglas, Ansel Bascom and James Mott. Musical entertainment will be provided by Tony DeFoor.
The 19th Amendment expressly guarantees that a citizen cannot be denied the right to vote because of that citizen's sex. It became part of the Constitution on August 26, 1920. In 1971, U.S. Representative Bella Abzug (D-NY) was able to get a Congressional Resolution passed that designated every future August 26th as Women's Equality Day to commemorate the passage of the 19th Amendment, the Woman Suffrage Amendment to the United States Constitution.
The event is free and open to the public. Attendees are asked to bring their own lawn chairs, as seating is very limited.
Refreshments will be served following the program at the Upton House. This event is co-sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Trumbull County, Upton Association, Warren Civic League, GFWC Ohio Warren Junior Women’s League, and GFWC Warren City Federation of Women’s Clubs.
Committee members are: Sandy Mahaffey, co-chair, Danita Davis, Charlotte Meloni, Danita Davis, Dorie Harris, Mary Lou Jarrett, Eddie Wolcott, Ellen Partin, Peggy Boyd and Terri Crabbs, Chair and Gloria Rodgers.
