![]() Dear Lions Club Members, March-April 2008 Dear Lions Club Members, Well it has been a very successful year so far. We are right in the middle of our busiest time of year not counting December. February was a relatively slow month for our club. The month started on a sad note for our club as we bid farewell to our good friend Lion Ed Jewell. Thanks to all who showed up to pay their respects to Lion Ed and his family. On February 21st we fought the bad weather and entertained guests at our 2nd membership meeting of the month. We welcomed the Riverside Jaycees and the Stebbins Leo club as we all took part in the Annual Dayton Dragons training. It was a very snowy night and thankfully everything made it home safely. Thanks to Lion Rick Taylor for arranging the training. We had our annual Day of Caring breakfast on Sunday February 24th in a new location this year. We were at the Community Methodist Church on Burkhardt. We raised $700.00 for the needy in Dayton. Thanks to all who helped out and a special thanks to the ladies from Kohl’s for helping out. Their assistance was greatly appreciated. On Monday Feb 25th we had our bi-monthly visit to Mad River Manor and fed goodies to 25 residents. 10 Lions participated and all had a good time. March 1st started off a very busy month for our club. We worked two fundraisers on the same day. In the morning we assisted Lion Mike Eaglowski in hosting his 2nd annual Superintendent’s Community Breakfast. According to Lion Mike over 600 were served and all were treated to a concert by the Mad River Middle School choirs. In the afternoon Lion Mary, Lion Dan, Lion Lydia, and Lion Randy worked the Elder-Beerman Community Day Book Sale at the Centerville store. They were able to sell 20 books and along with the 10 books that were sold during the morning breakfast our club added 30 books to our 50 books already sold. Our total sales for the spring campaign were 80 books. We were 5 books short from our fall sale last October but we did receive a bigger portion of the store employees’ sales and came out just about even between the two sales (around $565.00 each). Thanks to everyone for selling books and making this effort so successful. I look forward to our fall sale this coming October when I hope to move us to the Fairfield Commons store. Hopefully the Leos club will take over our slot at the Centerville store. As I’ve said numerous times this is a very worthwhile event. We received a great return for not a whole lot of work. We welcomed Tim Phister from the MRDD as our guest speaker at our March 6th membership meeting. We thank Tim for all the great information and thanks to Lion Mary for inviting him to join us.
On Sunday March 16th a group of us got together at Clancy’s on Burkhardt to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. We all had lots of good food, drink, and fun. It was a nice time for us to just kick back and have a good time together. Did everyone get to hold Haley Blackburn at least once? Thanks Rachelle for bringing her out. We expected to bring in a couple new members at our membership meeting on Thursday March 20th but school meetings kept them away. We look forward to bringing our new Lions Ron Coleman and Ron Flore at our April 3rd meeting. We will also have a special guest speaker at our April 3rd meeting. Lion Bud Brown from the Vandalia Lions will be with us to present his program on Canine Companions for Independence. We also plan to welcome back Vice District Governor Lion Nancy Ginn to preside over our installations of new members. Monday March 24th we had another visit to Echoing Valley for some goodies with the residents there. Friday March 28th was a Zone 2 meeting hosted by the Vandalia Lions Club. XX Lions attended that. Thanks to our very own Lion Freda, Zone 2 Chairman for a great program. Saturday March 29th we took part in the annual Stebbins Jr ROTC Drill Team Competition. This function is always a fun time for our club. We annually sponsor this event by providing funding for trophies and providing manpower to work the kitchen and sell raffle tickets. We sometime help out as runners for the voting too. We are always busy and this event is no different. I know Lion Jack, Lion Mike, and all the cadets thank our club for the support. We started registrations for the District Convention 25-27 April in Blue Ash. Please see me for registration forms at any of our meetings. I look forward to a good group of Mad River Lions attending the convention this year. As always our club will be doing the tail twisting, so the more members that attend, the easier this task will be. Lion Lydia Houser and Lion Leigh Huey will be heading up the tail twisting for the convention again this year. Our delegates for this year’s convention are Lion Chuck, Lion Curt, Lion Lydia, Lion Jack, and Lion Randy. We will have our regular membership meeting on Thursday April 17th. The annual Dayton Metro parks river clean up is Saturday April 19th. As of this newsletter the event was to take place at Eastwood Park on Harshman Road. Monday April 21st is the Annual Dayton Eye Bank Dinner at Sinclair Community College. I look forward to seeing a lot of our club at that function. It is always a good time and the Eye Bank staff always has a wonderful speaker. This is a free event and all are welcome to attend. Thanks to PDG Lion Homer for heading up this event for our club. April will finish off with the District 13-H convention the 25th – 27th. Then we will visit Mad River Manor on Monday April 28th for some more sweet goodies and fellowship with the residents. We also start working Dayton Dragons game on Tuesday April 8th and Friday April 18th. I think the game on the 8th is full but there are still slots for workers on the 18th. See Lions Rick, Russ, Curt, or Bill to sign-up. I want to pass on my continued thanks to all of you for your support this year. You have made this a very enjoyable and satisfying year for me. I know with your continued support our club will finish this Lions year with a bang. Keep up the great work. Please remember the sick in your prayers and also those not able to attend our meetings. We love seeing all of you and hope those who haven’t been there will be able to attend the meetings soon. We are having a good time together, so I hope to see you at the next meeting.
