![]() May-June 2008 Dear Lions Club Members, Well I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. This Lions year is quickly winding down, 10 months down 2 to go. We are still a very busy club. April began with our 1st membership meeting of the month. We welcomed Vice District Governor Nancy Ginn and her husband Past District Governor Lion Hugh. Lion Nancy inducted our new members Lion Ron Flohre and Lion Ron Coleman into our club. We welcome Lions Ron and Ron to our club and look forward to working many events with them over the coming years. We also welcomed Lion Bud Brown and his wife Lioness Esther Brown from the Vandalia clubs. They brought their new Canine Companion trainee, Winslow, who performed some of the commands he has learned. Lion Bud also gave a great video presentation on the Canine Companions for Life program. April continued with the Five Rivers Metro Park River clean-up on Saturday April 19th. We served about 750 people and had the help of five women from Kohl’s, who helped out on the serving line. We thank them for their assistance and look forward to working with them again. Some of these ladies were also present at our Day of Caring breakfast back in February. Thanks to Lion Mike Smith for organizing the event.25 Lions from our club attended the Dayton Lion’s Eye Bank dinner on Monday April 21st. We enjoyed a wonderful meal and listened to 3 very interesting speakers. 10 of our members attended the District 13-H convention April 25-27th down in Blue Ash. We as a club brought home a group of annual awards. Our tail twisters, Lion Leigh and Lion Lydia, were in charge of tail twisting for the convention and did a great job. Lions Freda, Chuck, Curt, Buck, and Randy helped out with the fund raising and gift giving duties. Our club has been invited back to the convention for the next three years to handle tail twisting again. On Monday April 29th we had an Ice Cream social at Mad River Manor. 13 Lions and 1 guest served 27 residents ice cream, cookies, cake and other goodies. Everyone left with a full stomach and a smile on their face.
May began with our first membership meeting (May 1st) where we welcomed Past District Governor Lion Dick Weimer and his wife Lion Jo. Lion Dick visited us to induct our new Lions, Steve and Helen Hoke, but due to illness they were not able to attend. Lion Dick was able to induct the Hokes at our May 17th membership meeting. We worked the Mother’s Day Flower Sale Thursday May 8th- Sunday May 11th. Initial reports show our club sold over $4100 of flowers. After expenses are taken out Lion Rick believes we should make a net profit of $1300. Thanks to Lions Brian and Sharon Dunkle for heading up the flower sale this year. Lion Joe will be heading up the Flag Day celebration on Friday May 23rd at Spinning Hills Middle School. We have our last Ice Cream Social of the year on Monday May 26th at Echoing Valley. We will resume our Ice Cream Socials again in August. May finishes off with the Senior Breakfast at Stebbins High School on Thursday morning May 29th. We will be announcing our 2008 scholarship winners at the breakfast. June will start off with our annual Installation Dinner on Thursday June 5th. This year’s dinner will be at the Spaghetti Warehouse on 5th Street in downtown Dayton. Social time will be at 6:00; dinner will be served at 6:30. Our very own Past District Governor Lion Homer will install our 2008-2009 Officers: Lion President- Cliff Clements, 1st Vice President- Lion Mary Stinson, 2nd Vice President and Leos Advisor- Lion Jack Morris, 3rd Vice President -Lion Lydia Houser, Treasurer- Lion Rick Taylor, and Secretary- Lion Carrie Lemaster. In July we will again be working the Beavercreek 4th of July celebration at Rotary Park in Beavercreek. Lion Russ will be getting us signed up and Lion Bob Pickle hopefully can pull our trailer out to the park again this year. We look forward to everyone lending a hand if you are in town. This is usually a pretty good fundraiser for our club. Lion Marilyn will be just coming off her surgery, so if you are able, please bake up some goodies for us to sell at the 4th of July celebration. This will be Lion Cliff’s 1st official function of his year. Lion Dan is taking sign-ups now for the Montgomery County Fair running from Wednesday August 27th thru Monday September 1st. We would like everyone to sign up for at least 3-6 hours. If all of us pitch in and work our share we should be able to cover all shifts for this year’s fair. I want to thank all of you for all of your support this year. I hope you will give the same support to Lion Cliff and his incoming officers. I look forward to working with all of you. Remember we still have Dayton Dragons games to work in June (3rd, 20th, and 24th), July (11th, 14th, and 28th), and August (8th and 19th). Please get with Lion Rick Taylor or Lion Bill Hiatt to sign up for those games. Even though we won’t be having membership meetings after June 5th, we will continue to have our regular board meetings Tuesday/Jun 10th and Tuesday/Jul 8th. Our 1st membership meeting of the new year will be Thursday August 15th /6:30 at the Old Virginia Stevenson Elementary School on Old Harshman Road. Yours in Lionism, Lion President Randy | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
