![]() Competition Campout Our troop's patrols went head to head against patrols from Dayton and Genoa Township at a camp out in November at the John Beltz Retreat Center. The boys were challenged to keep a clean and orderly camp, cook meals, set up tents blindfolded, and more. The highlight of the weekend was a flag retiring ceremony at the bonfire. Orienteering Opportunity Those of you who are working on or who would like to work on the Orienteering Merit Badge, there is a great nearby opportunity to do one of the requirements. The Central Ohio Orienteering Club is running an Orienteering Course at Camp Lazarus on December 7. You need to show up at Camp Lazarus between 11 and noon, and the course will probably take an hour or less. Bring a compass and $2 (scouts and scouters price). They will have Beginner and Advanced Beginner courses, plus GPS instruction and Mapping for advanced orienteers. When you get close to Lazarus, start looking for the Orienteering signs to direct you to the start. You can check www.centralohioorienteers.org for more details. Happy Orienteering! A New Scout's Guide to the Board of Review While a scout may look at the Board of Review with some concern, actually, it is more of a mentoring opportunity for the Committee Members toward that scout. The Scoutmaster Conference has already taken care of double checking that the requirements were met. The Board of Review meets to talk to the scout, to get the scout used to talking about himself to adults, and to confirm for the scout that his progress and membership is affirmed. Anyone who has had successive Boards of Review with one scout can tell you how gratifying it is to see the growth from the beginning (not able to make eye contact, one word answers, shaky handshake) to a more confident young man (eye contact, descriptions of the work for merit badges, confident voice, firm handshake). This is good preparation for the Eagle Board of Review, but also for job interviews, college interviews, and putting your best foot forward. The Board of Review will try to get to know the scout a little bit. Questions can include what the scout liked about completing some aspect of the advancement. -- Carol Mohr
