Licking County Adult Probation Community Service Program Parker Park has again been included in the 2009 Licking County Adult Probation Community Service Program. Having already used the program in 2008, it has proven very helpful in keeping up on park maintenance.
Being a part of this free program helps conserve park funds by utilizing potentially available services such as weed whacking, trash or debris pick-up, flower bed maintenance, and removal of downed limbs. LCCSP supervisors and participants will work in Parker Park on the 2nd Monday of each month from March - November.

Projects & Grants The Park Board successfully wrote for the Mill Race/Hemlock Trails Walking Path ODNR Grant and is continuously working to obtain grants or donors for the long list of park improvment projects. Please see project updates and project donors below:
Walk Trail/Scenic Overlook Project: The state-required Phase I Archeological Survey of Parker Park has been completed (archelogical survey results are available for viewing at Alexandria Public Library);as of May 5, Ohio Historical Preservation Office finally OK'd the project to move ahead. Due to increasing costs & time constraints, Park Board & ODNR have mutually agreed to delete the Scenic Overlook portion of the project, with remaining monies to be recycled toward costs of the Walk Trail Project. Required pre-project contracts have been approved by ODNR. Walk Trail Project RFPs will be advertised in coming weeks for contractor bidding.
Parker Park Community Center Project: This much-needed park center, designed to benefit park patrons or the entire community, has received two major contributions: $1000 from Wal-Mart Corporation and $5000 from Park National Bank Foundation. Thank you, donors! Construction of this center will provide permanent restrooms for the park, allow use of the park during winter months, and provide a suitable site for Park Board, community, organizational, or private meetings, fundraisers, or events. All monies are being held in the 501(C)(3)"Parker Park Community Center Project Fund" at Licking County Foundation.
Restore Running Water: A big thank-you to Dan Allen Drilling of Pataskala for donating labor, materials, and equipment to complete refurbishing of the current well...park volunteers have wired the pressure tank and plumbed the fountain bubbler; some minor plumbing and water testing remains to be done. Park Board hopes to have the drinking fountain bubbler operational by late July or early August. Ball Field Up-Keep: Brookside Materials donated clay mix to upgrade the Parker Park Ball Diamond...Hutchinson Materials donated free trucking for the clay mix. Village resident Brian Dague donated heavy equipment to move and spread the clay mix, while LCCSP workers, Mayor Harold Lee, and NYAA Coach/Councilman Mike Carter worked to hand-rake or drag the new field mix to level it. NYAA Coach Matt King and Softball Commissioner Kevin Scott also worked hard grading the infield smooth and remeasuring/setting bases. Thanks to all these folks...the field looks great! And another thank-you to all the volunteers who repaired the dugout, fences, and backstop!
Parking lot: Brookside Materials donated #57 gravel for the newly cleared parking space areas on the lot's east side...Hutchinson Materials donated free trucking for these materials. Village resident Brian Dague used his skid steer to move and spread the gravel. Thank you, Jerry Bennett and Tom Kurtz of Brookside, Don Martin and Gary Hutchinson of Hutchinson Materials, and Brian Dague of Alexandria!
MYSTERY DONOR FOR ENTRY DRIVE REVEALED: Although Brookside Materials agreed to donate gravel and hauling for the park's entry drive, a "mystery donor" beat everyone to the punch--someone hauled in three loads of gravel, spread it, and vanished! Hutchison Materials was FINALLY revealed as the mystery donor...again, a huge thank you goes out to Don Martin and Gary Hutchinson for this surprise donation!
Ballfield Light Repairs: Due to some recent wind damage and wiring problems, Park Board is currently getting bids to repair a broken light fixture, replace a cross arm, replace light bulbs, and repair faulty wiring on three light poles--money was recently raised during the Fun Days 50-50 Raffle to help offset cost of these repairs.
If you have any suggestions for grants or would like to donate to the park, please feel free to contact any Park Board Trustee. | |

Seesaw progress adds spring to winter's step
By Kevin Hull
The weather outside might be frightful, but delightful things still are happening at Parker Park -- new seesaw seats have been finished, weatherproofed and installed.
Thanks to additional money raised during the "Pennies for Park Swings" campaign at Alexandria Elementary School, generous discounts by Lowe's and plenty of elbow grease and volunteered time from village resident Ed Compton and Park Board Trustee Troy Willeke, seesaw materials were bought, transported, finished and installed.
Ed volunteered his truck and time to buy needed materials, and Lowe's of Heath offered a generous 25 percent discount on all materials.
Ed created four weatherproof seesaw seats with routered edges to prevent small legs from getting scrapes or splinters.
Ed and Troy both braved rainy weather Saturday to install the seesaw seats. The finished project looks wonderful. With new swing seats already installed and paint due to be applied to the seesaw base, swing set and slide this spring, Parker Park will have a shiny, bright look.
If you see Ed or Troy, thank them or give them a pat on the back for a well-done job -- their work and that of many other community volunteers are examples of why Alexandria and St. Albans Township are such great places to live. |
