Union County Project Linus Chapter Begins The Union County Chapter of Project Linus was started on February 28, 2007 by Kim Mathewson, a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Marysville. Kim's passion for Project Linus comes as a result of her son's death in 2004. Jason Mathewson was killed in a car accident at the age of 16. One thing that Kim struggled with during that time is that she could not be there to comfort him when this happened. He died almost instantly and they did not know of the accident until he had already passed. Because of this, Kim has a strong desire to help and comfort children going through difficult times. What a better way than to offer a comfort blanket to them. We welcome anyone to become a blanketeer for our Project Linus Chapter here in Union County. Project Linus is a volunteer non-profit organization with a two-fold mission.
  • First, it is our mission to provide love, a sense of security, warmth and comfort to chidren who are seriously ill, traumatized, or otherwise in need through gifts of new, handmade blankets, afghans, and quilts, lovingly created by volunteer “blanketeers”.
  • Second, it is our mission to provide a rewarding and fun service opportunity for interested individuals and groups in local communities, for the benefit of children ages birth to 18 years old.

We are looking for “blanketeers” to provide love, a sense of security, warmth and comfort to children in need in Union County. Kim's home at 16831 Wheeler Green Rd. Marysville, Ohio, will be our storage and distribution center. We can arrange to pick up blankets if needed, or you may drop them off at the Lighthouse Christian Book Store in Marysville, the Richwood North Union Public Library in Richwood, or the Lonestar Quilting Company in Marysville. Please ask at the desk where to leave your donation.

Honda Grant

I was contacted again this month by Honda about com-munity service @ the plant during their non-production time. There has been terrible flooding in Thailand that has caused a delay in getting critical parts for the Honda Plants. I was asked for a proposal to keep a second shift crew busy for 8 hours. They said they would give us up to $5000 to buy supplies needed for this work day at the plant. Kim Work and I gladly went to JoAnn’s and purchased 60 bolts of fleece for this project. We were to go to the plant on a Friday in November. Due to many employees wanting a 3 day weekend to spend their Christmas bonuses(just spec-ulating, Haha), our project was put on hold. We will hang on to this huge amount of fleece for awhile to see if there are any other non-production days coming up when we can go to the plant to make blankets. We have been given the $5000 Grant whether we make the blankets at the plant or not. If we do not use the fleece at Honda, I will have plenty of fleece on hand if your groups would like to take some and make them into blankets for us. I will let you know in a few months when I see how Honda will proceed with this project. We are so grateful to Honda for their interest in what we are doing and for supporting us in our efforts.
 Give & Take
This is a new section of our newsletter. If you have items you would like to donate to someone, ie fabric, yard, sewing machine, we can list it in the newsletter, and hopefully find someone who can put it to use. You can also list items you are looking for. These items will be free-not for sale. You can give me your contact info for your item and I will pass it along if a person asks about the item. Here are a few items I have to get us started:
1. I have a PVC pipe quilt frame. I’ve never used it …maybe you can.
2. I have quilt fabric (Must be used for Project Linus Blankets)
3. I have several packages of quilt batting(must be used for Project Linus blankets)
4. I am looking for your yarn leftovers. I am making hats for the Union County Care train and Operation Christmas Child. I will be working on them all year long. Scraps make cute little hats.
