How Toastmasters Works

At Toastmasters, members learn by speaking to groups and working with others in a supportive environment. Each meeting gives everyone an opportunity to practice:

Conducting meetings: Meetings usually begin with a short business session which helps members learn basic meeting procedures.

Volunteering for impromptu speeches (Table Topics): Members and Guests present 1 to 2 minute impromptu speeches on assigned topics.

Presenting prepared speeches: A few members present speeches based on projects from the Toastmasters International Communication and Leadership Program manuals.
Projects cover such topics as speech organization, voice, language, gestures, and persuasion.

Constructive evaluation: Every prepared speaker is assigned an evaluator who points out speech strengths and offers suggestions for improvement.

Assigned Meeting Roles

Toastmaster -- Master of Ceremonies, acts as a host for the meeting.
Speakers -- present prepared speeches to fulfill projects within a manual.
Opening Thoughts -- starts the meeting with an inspirational thought, tallies the votes for best speaker, evaluator, and table topics.
Table Topic Master -- gives everyone the opportunity to participate with a short impromptu speech during this portion of the meeting.
Speech Evaluator -- tells the speaker what they liked and offers suggestions on how to improve.
General Evaluator -- evaluates the entire meeting with an emphasis on the performance of the Toastmaster.
Timer -- times speeches, evaluations and topics, and helps the meeting progress within appropriate time limits.
Grammarian -- monitors and reports vocabulary usage.
"AH" Counter -- monitors and reports audible pauses and verbal crutches.
