Living Art

by Joel Owen

What is your favorite piece of art? Perhaps you are captivated by the Mona Lisa? If you’ve ever seen the painting of the Sistine Chapel dome, maybe that has captured your imagination. Many people love the statue of David, while many others are more excited about today’s abstract art. As you think about what your favorite piece of art is, write down why you like that particular object so much- what makes it special to you?

Have you ever considered yourself a work of art? Genesis 2:7 says, “The LORD God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being. (Emphasis added) God formed you in His own unique design and made you a living being. Meditate on this statement today: Christ works in the living.

In a few sentences, write in your journal what you think that means:

What do you think that God desires to do with your life? How is he using you right now and what future plans do you think He has for you? Christ works in the living: you! You are a work of art in the hands of the Master Artist! You are an original with a specific design and purpose.

There is a problem with living art, however: we tend to want to shape our own lives and take over as the artist. When I look back on life from eternity I don’t want to see all God desired to do with my life that I stubbornly blocked in rebellion. Today, surrender control of your life to Jesus because you recognize that He is the artist and is shaping you for a specific purpose.

Memory Verse this week: Philippians 1:6 “…being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”

In your time of prayer today thank God for designing you to be a living work of art. Submit to the fact that you are the canvas and He is the painter. Ask God to make you into what He desires for you to be. You might even want to write a letter to the Artist today.

Quote of the Week:

“Christ is more of an Artist than the artists; He works in the living spirit and the living flesh; He makes men instead of statues.”

- Vincent Van Gogh
