A Special Friend
1 John 3:1-3 See how very much our heavenly Father loves us, for He allows us to be called His children -- think of it -- and we really are (1 John 3:1 TLB).

A friend is someone who makes us feel special. We all need the self-esteem that comes when a person helps us to know that we are unique, never-to-be-repeated miracles of God. What can we do and say to our friends that communicates this dynamic inner assurance? The key is in the word "affirmation." Most of us know all about our inadequacies and failures. What we need are friends who believe in us and help us imagine and realize our full potential. It is easy to get down on ourselves and devaluate the special person we were created to be. A friend is a lift, not a load; a boost, not a burden.

The liberating power of affirmation flows from a person who feels of value himself. When we experience the Lord's delight in us and the lengths He was willing to go to show us how special we are, we become people with whom others feel the excitement of their specialness. People who have the gift of self-esteem are able to make their friends feel good about themselves. If we're not excited about being ourselves, we can be sure no one around us will be excited about himself. The scales of our lives are heavily weighted with the self-negation of years of conditioning. We are to be friends who tip the scales with the precious gift of affirmation.
