IRS REQUIREMENTS FOR NON-PROFITS The IRS Requires EACH AND EVERY CLUB to have an EIN Number (employee identification number); AND each club has to fill out a tax return, although not the long, drawn out one we individuals do. This is in post card form or it can be done on line. OBTAINING AN EIN Your individual club treasurer may follow the steps below (or if she isn't proficient on the computer, someone may do it for her). This is EASY to do -- just takes a little time To get EIN: www.irs.gov Key Work Search: (upper right hand corner) "EIN" You may then enter the info and get your EIN immediately. Or, the ladies may call 1-800-829-4933. They will need to print the form and have it in front of them so they can be ready to respond to questions. Or, they can mail or fax the form but it will take longer. Check the box - Charity for Non-Profit as to the type of organization.
To FILE OUR CLUB TAX RETURNS we will go to the IRS web site again:. www.irs.gov Key Word Search: "990-N" Select E-Postcard for Not-fot-Profits that have receipts less than $25,000 - click on this and it will take us out to Urban Institute (this is the contractor for Not-for-Profit returns). We may then complete the postcard return on line Clubs should complete this Postcard return BY the end of their May, 2009 club year. Remember, the IRS uses the calendar year Jan-Dec. and gives a few months grace. Let's NOT waste hard earned project money by paying fines to the IRS! The fines are hefty. $20.00 per day up to $10,000.00! |

CAPSULE HISTORY OF GFWC OKLAHOMA
Oklahoma has had the honor of two GFWC presidents. Roberta Campbell Lawson was GFWC President from 1935 to 1938. Mrs. Lawson was born in Alluwe, Indian Territory, to J.E. Campbell, a pioneer from Virginia, and Emma Journeycake Campbell, daughter of the last Delaware tribal chief, the Reverend Charles Journeycake. Educated in Missouri, she married Eugene B. Lawson in 1901. They established their home in Nowata, Indian Territory. The first Women's club was established in Nowata in 1903. Mrs Lawson was its first president, serving five years. She was president of the Oklahoma Federation of Women's Clubs from 1917 to 1922, director of the General Federation of Women's Clubs and then was elected president of the GFWC, the largest organization of women in the world. The second woman from Oklahoma to be GFWC Presient was Mrs. E. Lee Ozbirn. Mrs. Ozbirn was GFWC President from 1961 t0 1962. Born in Era, Texas, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. W. H. Freeman, came to Oklahoma as a young girl. She graduated from the University of Oklahoma. Mrs. Ozbirn began her club service in the small town of Sentinel and later Oklahoma City.
