| Literary Department The Literary Department was founded in 1903 and federated in 1904. These dedicated ladies asked each citizen to pledge one dollar to create a library. The original register book is in existence at the McAlester Public Library today showing each individual signature and the amount they pledged. This group meets the first Monday of each month September through May. They review one book each month having a different member as moderator. We celebrate two ladies in this group with over 50 years of service to our community. Muriel Gladstein and Mary Jean Jackson. A member of this department is the President of the McAlester Literacy Council. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Homemakers When the Homemakers Department was created in 1943, women kept their homes while their husbands earned a living. Today, these active ladies lead our community keeping us current with pertinent affairs. They meet the first Monday of each month, September - May. This group donates items each month to the Battered Women's Shelter. During their Holiday project, the ladies purchased items for 2 mothers and their 4 children at the shelter for their only Christmas. This group sang Christmas carols at retired members homes and at McAlester Hospice during the grand opening of the new facility. One member has over 50 years of service. She is Beth McClain. |
Cornerstone Creations Formed in 1993, this dedicated group of ladies meet the second Saturday of each month at the Puterbaugh Memorial Center to either create a craft or attend a craft show. Members held a very successful Soup & Salad luncheon in November. The proceeds benefit McAlester Hospice and cancer victims in this area. Members of this group volunteer at Shared Blessings, Mercy Clinic, Meals On Wheels and through their church organizations. Members have pieced and sewn two quilts to raise funds to donate to our cancer victims in Pittsburg County. Cornerstone Creations members collected non-perishable food items during their Holiday Party in December. These items were donated a family to provide their Christmas. Their monetary situation had diminished to meet bare necessities. Christmas Dinner along with clothing gifts for the mother and two children were wrapped and given to the family. One member of this department is on the State of Oklahoma Board of Directors for Literacy and an adult literacy tutor. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
