Literary Department The Literary Department was founded in 1903 and federated in 1904. These dedicated ladies asked each citizen to pledge one dollar to create a library. The original register book is in existence at the McAlester Public Library today showing each individual signature and the amount they pledged. This group meets the first Monday of each month September through May. They review one book each month having a different member as moderator. We celebrate ladies in this group with over 50 years of service to our community. A member of this department is on the Board of the McAlester Literacy Council.

Homemakers
When the Homemakers Department was created in 1943, women kept their homes while their husbands earned a living. Today, these active ladies lead our community keeping us current with pertinent affairs. They meet the first Monday of each month, September - May. This group donates items each month to the Battered Women's Shelter. During their Holiday project, the ladies purchased items for 2 mothers and their 4 children at the shelter for their only Christmas. This group sang Christmas carols at retired members homes and at McAlester Hospice during the grand opening of the new facility. One member has over 50 years of service. She is Beth McClain. Janis Allford is VP of McAlester Fortnightly and Linda Wood is Secretary.
