GFWC-OK McAlester Fortnightly members are ending their 2009 year as busy as ever. The Cornerstone Creations Department prepared the decorations for the SE District Convention held in McAlester in October in conjunction with the Mainstreet McAlester Car Show. Many thanks to the 13 members of this department of McAlester Fortnightly. Great team work enabled this group to pull this complicated event off.

CASA of SE Oklahoma benefitted from the Done in a Day Project. 22 "Save the CASA Kids" bags were donated to the CASA offices which serve our SE District 7 club area.

Photos are shown in the Holiday Photo Tab.

The Homemakers Department collected Box Tops for Education which were donated to the William Gay Early Childhood Center. This Department gathered items for the local Battered Women's Shelter supporting the GFWC International President's project of Domestic Violence. These items are a holiday donation for 2009.

The Ceramic & Crafts department held their Nov 2 fundraiser by providing brunch and numerous items for Silent Auction.

Casual Gourmet members continue work on the walking trail at Mike Deak Field improving the landscaping for residents who walk each day for their health.

Welcome to McAlester Oklahoma's First Volunteer organization

GFWC-OK McAlester Fortnightly Invites All Ladies in Pittsburg County to join us in our Volunteer Work.

Our 94 members are very active in our community. You may join one of Five departments of Fortnightly.

Literary, Homemakers, Cornerstone Creations, Casual Gourmet and Ceramic & Crafts.

Each Department sets their yearly agenda of events. Fortnightly as a complete group meets three times a year to conduct business.

Do you enjoy using the McAlester Public Library? Our group founded the Library in 1904.

The photo above shows Fortnightly's 24 year member, Rita Sanders, being installed as Second Vice President of GFWC OK during the April, 2008 GFWC OK Spring Convention. Rita has served as President of McAlester Fortnightly and as SE District President.

Read about our deparments below and contact us to join our cause! View our Photo Album for photos from the SC Region meeting held in Tulsa, along with the latest projects we are working on. Be sure to click on the PHOTO ALBUM page to view the lovely photos from our 2008 Spring Banquet, "What Kind of Shoe Fits You". 3 members received their 50 year service award pins, while 21 members received their 25 year service award pins including our McAlester Ohoyohoma Club GFWC sisters.

Literary Department  The Literary Department was founded in 1903 and federated in 1904. These dedicated ladies asked each citizen to pledge one dollar to create a library. The original register book is in existence at the McAlester Public Library today showing each individual signature and the amount they pledged. This group meets the first Monday of each month September through May. They review one book each month having a different member as moderator. We celebrate two ladies in this group with over 50 years of service to our community. Muriel Gladstein and Mary Jean Jackson. A member of this department is the President of the McAlester Literacy Council.

Homemakers
When the Homemakers Department was created in 1943, women kept their homes while their husbands earned a living. Today, these active ladies lead our community keeping us current with pertinent affairs. They meet the first Monday of each month, September - May. This group donates items each month to the Battered Women's Shelter. During their Holiday project, the ladies purchased items for 2 mothers and their 4 children at the shelter for their only Christmas. This group sang Christmas carols at retired members homes and at McAlester Hospice during the grand opening of the new facility. One member has over 50 years of service. She is Beth McClain.
  Cornerstone Creations
Formed in 1993, this dedicated group of ladies meet the second Saturday of each month at the Puterbaugh Memorial Center to either create a craft or attend a craft show. Members held a very successful Soup & Salad luncheon in November. The proceeds benefit McAlester Hospice and cancer victims in this area. Members of this group volunteer at Shared Blessings, Mercy Clinic, Meals On Wheels and through their church organizations. Members have pieced and sewn two quilts to raise funds to donate to our cancer victims in Pittsburg County. Cornerstone Creations members collected non-perishable food items during their Holiday Party in December. These items were donated a family to provide their Christmas. Their monetary situation had diminished to meet bare necessities. Christmas Dinner along with clothing gifts for the mother and two children were wrapped and given to the family. One member of this department is on the State of Oklahoma Board of Directors for Literacy and an adult literacy tutor.

Casual Gourmet
Casual Gourmet was also founded in 1993. This group of ladies is known throughout our community for their decorating and cullinary skills. Many are members of our gardening societies also. Casual Gourmet hosts the bi-annual sabbath in memory of cancer victims in our area. This event is coordinated by McAlester Hospice, a non-profit organization and held at the "Little Chapel On The Hill" in McAlester, OK. This group of ladies volunteer their time and expertise to many organizations in our community including Meals on Wheels and various Soup Kitchens. This group represents Fortnightly on the Puterbaugh Memorial Center Board of Directors.

This group meets the third Tuesday Sept. - May at the Puterbaugh Memorial Center at 11:30 a.m. Their current project is a Community Beautification project by Mike Deak Field.

Ceramic & Crafts
Founded in 1962, this group meets in the Parish Hall of St. John's Catholic Church. This group either creates a new craft each month meeting the first Monday, September - May. They have held their yearly silent auction which raised sufficient funds for donations to the Youth Emergency Shelter, Shared Blessings and Battered Women's Shelter.
