Merit Badges

Earning merit badges is an important part of scouting. They provide the scout with an opportunity to learn about a wide variety of things. This enlargement and supplementation of the scout's education is an important goal of the BSA. The merit badge program helps scouts build the kind of self-confidence that comes from overcoming obstacles to achieve a goal. In the process of earning a merit badge, the scout also acquires diverse knowledge that will be useful and helpful to him in the future. There are over 120 merit badges available. To earn the rank of Eagle each scout must earn 21 merit badges, eleven of which are required and ten of which are 'elective'. The badges required for the Eagle advancement are:
First Aid
Citizenship in the Community
Citizenship in the Nation
Citizenship in the World
Communications
Personal Fitness
Emergency Preparedness OR Lifesaving
Environmental Science
Personal Management
Camping
Hiking OR Cycling OR Swimming
Family Life.
Our troop tries to offer several Eagle required and non-Eagle required merit badge courses every year. Any merit badge course offered by the troop must be approved by the Scoutmaster before starting the badge. Every merit badge offered by the BSA is required to be taught by a Merit Badge Counsellor certified with the Council. For Eagle required merit badges offered by a Certified Merit Badge Counselor of Troop 193, it is our troop's policy to offer the merit badge to every Scout in the troop. If space must be limited, it is offered first to those Scouts with the most pressing need for the badge such as a Scout nearing his 18th birthday who needs the merit badge for his Eagle advancement. Exceptions to the policy must be approved by the Troop Merit Badge Chairman or the Scoutmaster. These merit badge courses will be included in the calendar and announced at troop meetings so that every Scout who wants the badge has an opportunity to participate.
