Pack 391 News

Scouts from Pack 391’s Bear Den are life savers

Scouts from Pack 391’s Bear Den 1 are life savers.
Literally.

Responding to a challenge from Bear Den Leaders Devery and Karen Youngblood, Bear scouts worked at a variety of special chores and earned a final total of nearly $500 to purchase mosquito nets for African children and their families as a part of the renown “Nothing But Nets” program, thus saving at least fifty lives, and probably as many as 200.

Every day on the continent of Africa, ten thousand people die from malaria, inflicted by rampant and uncontrolled mosquito populations.  Three thousand of those who die every day are children.  But officials note that one simple act can reduce these deaths by a staggering ninety-five percent:  sleeping under a mosquito net.  A joint venture between the National Basketball Association, Sports Illustrated and the United Methodist Church, among others, “Nothing But Nets” works with interested individuals and groups to purchase and ship special insecticide-treated mosquito nets to the hardest hit areas of Africa.  Each net can cover three to five people, depending on size, and can be purchased for just $10 each.

Challenging the boys to make a special sacrifice, the Youngblood’s gave the Bear scouts these parameters:

1.        Do not ask for money; work for it.  Volunteer for special chores or jobs with your parents, grandparents, neighbors or other adults.

2.        Be willing to give up something you WANT, and use that money instead to help African children get something they NEED.

3.    Every $10 you earn will not just save at least one life, but at least two, since your contributions will be matched dollar for dollar by the Youngblood’s.

Each boy took to the challenge in their own, unselfish ways.  J. Ocker, M. Payne, and C. Betts (a Tiger Cub who frequents Bear Meetings with his big brother) all earned $50 on a single work day, doing meaningful and difficult chores ranging from picking up rocks to picking up dog waste.  J. Ikeda did projects for his mom and other family members to raise a total of $60.  R. Betts worked on the workday as well as volunteered to do dishes and other work at home, thus raising $71.

Leading the way for the Bears was W. Newman, whose ambitious embrace of the “Nothing But Nets” challenge led him to the following chores:

·          Sweeping up hair for his barber,

·          Loading and unloading electric guitars and equipment three times,

·          Helping relatives with everything from groceries to planting a flower bed, and, perhaps the most creative,

·          Negotiating with a family member to get one penny for every walnut picked up out of their yard; then going out and picking up two thousand walnuts to earn another $20!

All told, W. Newman earned $100!  That effort brought in another $100 in match by the Youngblood’s, plus won him the official “BuzzKill” t-shirt of “Nothing But Nets”, which triggered another ten dollar donation in his name.  His final total of $210 meant that through his unselfish efforts, this young scout saved at least twenty one lives, and likely closer to one hundred lives!

When the efforts of all the boys were combined, the final numbers were staggering:

·          Total contribution to “Nothing But Nets” - $481.00

·          Total lives saved – at least 50, but likely closer to 200

·          Lessons learned in hard work, unselfishness, and giving – priceless!

Thanks to a previous contribution that pays for all overhead expenses, all money given to “Nothing But Nets” goes directly to purchase nets.

For more information about “Nothing But Nets” contact Devery or Karen Youngblood, or visit their website at www.nothingbutnets.net/.

THE WAY OF THE ARROW

The Arrow of Light Award is the highest rank in Cub Scouting and the only Cub Scout award that is carried over to Boy Scouts to wear on the Boy Scout uniform.

This is one of the toughest awards to earn in as a Webelo. They had to earn the Webelos badge and at least eight activity badges including Citizen, Readyman, and Fitness.

WORDS OF WISDOM

What is a Scout?

He enjoys a hike through the woods more than he does a walk over the city streets.
He knows the stars by name and can find his way by them.
When he walks through the woods, he sees things others do not see.
He speaks softly and answers questions modestly.
His sense of honor is his only taskmaster, and his honor he guards as jealously as did the knights of old.
He practices self-control, for he knows that men who master problems in the world must first master themselves.
He never flinches in the face of danger. He must be alert to preserve his safety and that of others.
He desires a strong body, an alert mind, and an unconquerable spirit.
A Scout is one who will always "Be prepared".

Wow

Wow!
Spring is nearly upon us.  Spring Break is here!   And, the school year, well, won't be long until summer.

How's everyone doing in completing their Achievements for Rank, Electives, Beltloops, and Activity Pins?
Won't be long and Graduation will be upon us!

In the coming months we need to look ahead to those Spring and Summertime activities.
Campouts, hikes, and other adventures for the Spring, and DayCamp, Resident Camp, Swim parties, and other Summertime events.
Scouting doesn't end with the school year.  Summer is a great time to have a few outings and gatherings of the Den or Pack.  It also helps the Pack in earning the Summertime Achievement award.  It's not easy, but with your help, we can make it again this year.  It's always a good time when the Pack gets together.  Seeing those old friends and some new.  Don't forget to invite a friend to be a Scout.  Things are always more fun when we can share the time with friends.

I did mention the Day Camp and Resident Camps.
DayCamp will be held at Camp Kickapoo the week of June 16-20, 2008.  Beth Stone and Janet Windom will be back again to run this year's camp.  You'll also see a lot of other familiar faces from last year there again to teach Scouts on various activities.  This year's theme will be based on a SAFARI.  An exciting adventure awaits you.  As to Leadership and Adult participation, the Camp can always use your assistance to help out in many ways.  Volunteers are always needed.  It's great fun to work with the many youth in our District at DayCamp.  Please join us.

Resident Camp is held at Camp George Thomas near Apache.  Another great Camp in the Last Frontier Council.  If you look on the Council's website, you'll find more information as to the variety of camps there this summer in June.  Many of the camps are geared toward Webelos, but there are Cub Scout camps as well.  If you need assistance, I'll try to dig up more information on these camps.  I've not been with the boys to this one, but would like to give it a try.  There is a larger fee for this, and some assistance is available.

Well time to sign off for now.
And, keep that Scouting Spirit Alive!!!
