Caring Corner
By Stella Guenther, BCRW’s Caring Corner Reporter for April, 2008
Jean Nelson – April 22. On the spot reporting regarding Jean Nelson. I just finished talking to Jean and she is back on the road to recovery. Jean is still in the hospital after quite a scare and sounding a bit week. She can have visitors, but I suggest they be short and sweet. She is on the 3rd floor North. She requests Prayer – Prayer –Prayer. Cards would be good, too, I think. She reads them over and over again. Telephone 768-5000 ext. 3134

Helen Ames – Helen has healed from her fall and is now at Corvallis Manor, room 105. Things are about the same for Helen, but my greatest joy when visiting is to see her beautiful smile when she greats me and her beautiful twinkly eyes. Keep the cards going and drop in for a visit. You might call and see when she is in therapy. 541–757-1651

Jane Buck – Due to some complications with Jane’s recent surgery and long recuperation process, Jane has resigned from the 1st Vice President’s position. A committee of three, Evelyne Hendrix, Maureen Russian and Stella Guenther make up the Program Committee. Telephone calls, cards and prayers are the recommended prescription. 754-6900

Jean Mater – You are getting the latest info. I just got off the phone with Jean. She is making headway on her book. She commented that it is about all she can do; so we may be reading a new book. She likes visitors, cards are always great and telephone calls are not a bother. 753-7944

News from Janet Paine - Dave and Janet are visiting their daughter in North Carolina. Janet hopes to return to her volunteer work at Republican Headquarters by fall. Currently she is the sole driver and Dave is taking additional exercises with a trainer three times a week.

Betty Malin – Betty is our contact with our Sister City. Her granddaughter has been admitted to the hospital and it could be any time for three little boys to enter this world. Keep Betty’s family in your prayers. I just talked to her and she is so excited. Can you imagine triplet boys, first pregnancy??? WHEW!!!!

April Birthdays

COMING UP

OFRW’s “Day at the Capitol”
Friday, May 16, 2008

Wear your RED Jackets and join OFRW for our day at the Capitol. Learn how to become a more effective Citizen Lobbyist and tips for testifying before the legislature on current issues. Jeff Kropf, Radio Talk Host, will be our guide of a tour of the Capitol to places very few Oregonians have had the pleasure of seeing. You won’t want to miss this special day at our State Capitol.

Our May meeting falls on Memorial Day so let’s plan to have a caravan to the “Day at the Capitol” and get credit for our regular meeting by having a quorum or more in attendance.

Plans are still in progress for “Day at the Capitol” - As soon as possible, a flyer will be sent with the time (tentative 9:00 am to 3:00 pm), cost for lunch, speaker’s names and day’s schedule, etc.

This type of event takes a magnitude of time and energy to plan. Benton County Women are known for their leadership and cooperation. Let’s show it by attending and letting our attendance be our way of showing appreciation and thanking those that take time out of their families’ schedules to help us make a difference where we live.

OREGON POLITICS: MAY 20 PRIMARY ELECTION

Our Oregon Republican Candidates

Senator Gordon Smith for U.S. Senate

Senator Smith was sworn in to the United States Senate on January 7, 1997, where he quickly earned a reputation as a statesman with an independent streak. Senate leaders have recognized Senator Smith’s abilities and have continually asked him to serve in key leadership and committee positions.

Smith serves on five major senate committees: Commerce, Science, Transportation, Energy and Natural Resources, Indian Affairs, and the powerful Finance Committee. He also serves as the Ranking Member of the Special Committee on Aging. In addition, he is a member of the Senate Western Water and Rural Health Caucuses as well as the Chairman of the High Tech Task Force. Smith is also co-chairman of the Senate Task Force on Medicare and Prescription Drugs and has been selected by leadership three times to be a Deputy Whip.

Senator Smith is recognized as an advocate for protecting Oregon's natural resources and the working families who depend on them for their livelihoods. Oregon has a long history of innovation in environmental policy that Smith continues to build upon. He has been working to strengthen and improve important policies such as the Oregon Forest Practices Act, the Beach Bill, and the Oregon Plan for Salmon and the Oregon Resources Protections Act. He has also played a pivotal role in passing legislation that will protect Steens Mountain and Portland's Bull Run watershed for generations to come. Smith believes that Oregon's legacy of good stewardship and Congress should apply consensus-based decision-making to many of the environmental issues under consideration. Since coming to the Senate, Smith has focused on issues crucial to the future health and prosperity of Oregonians. Re-elect Senator Gordon Smith.

Mike Erickson for U.S. Congressional District 5
(Opposed by Republican Kevin Mannix)
An Oregon success story, Mike Erickson grew up in a home of modest means but honest, hard-working values. The son of a police officer, Mike worked two jobs to get through college, where he earned a business degree at Portland State University and played football for Pokey Allen.

After college, Mike started a business in the basement of his home. With an innovative idea and what little savings he had, Mike built that company into one of the 500 fastest growing private companies in America, creating good jobs for Oregonians.

Mike’s company helps businesses cut costs and operate more efficiently, which in turn helps those companies serve their customers better. Even when prospective clients had doubts, Mike demonstrated to them that there were ways to cut costs that they didn’t recognize. Innovation, tenacity and problem solving have been the hallmarks of Mike’s business, and he’s earned the trust of over 200 Oregon businesses and some of the largest companies in America, such as Sony and American Honda.

Now, Mike wants to put his ideas, experience and values to work for us in Congress.

Kevin Mannix for U.S. Congressional District 5
(Opposed by Republican Mike Erickson)
Kevin grew up in South America, Ecuador, Panama and Bolivia, where his father was in the Foreign Service. He saw firsthand how crime, hunger, and lack of health care could devastate families.

Kevin started fighting for what is right early on. Upon enrolling at the University of Virginia and discovering that the student body consisted of only males, Kevin began to set right what he felt was wrong and fought for the admission of women and won. That proved to be really right for Kevin because he met his wife Susanna in the first class of women students. After his graduation from U of A, Kevin and Susanna Mannix chose Oregon as their home state. Susanna started her career in nursing and Kevin began his law practice.

As an Oregon legislator Kevin holds the record for passing more reform legislation than any single legislator in Oregon’s history. This includes passing reform legislation including landmark anti-stalking laws, expanded protections for our seniors, and laws that help Oregon Businesses.

In 1993, Kevin tried to get the legislature to pass mandatory minimum sentencing for violent career criminals. When the legislature balked, Kevin took his ideas to the people through the initiative process and passed Measure 11. “I know it’s his courage and determination that make him a great leader for Oregon.” – Susanna Mannix

Kevin’s record goes well beyond the legislature: 1) as a small business owner, Kevin paid more than 500 payrolls. 2) Kevin kept his promise to Oregonians to fight tax increases. He led the fight as State GOP Chair to defeat Governor Kulongoski’s $1.1 billion tax increase, which would have been the largest in state history (Measure 30). Americans for Tax Reform recognized Kevin for his “untiring efforts in the fight against higher taxes”.

Rick Dancer for Oregon Secretary of State
I am not a Professional Politician. I’m a former Television Journalist who honestly believes that the voice of the people is not only important, but also desperately needed to govern the State of Oregon. At the end of February I gave up my career in Television to take on the job of running for Secretary of State. Why Secretary of State? The Secretary of State works for you. He or she works for the people. When elected, I will make sure your voice is heard and given attention.

I truly believe that the only way Oregon will ever be “our” Oregon again, is if more of us get involved in the process of taking care of our great state. Many of you are sick of politics and want nothing to do with it. I’m not asking you to run for office, but I am asking you to get involved. We all get frustrated when we feel as though no one is listening to us. Now is not the time to retreat. We can vote for people who are like us and who will represent us in the government.

What happened to “We the People”? I think we’ve given up some of our responsibility. We honestly believe it’s “We the Legislature”, “We the City Council” or “We the mayor”. It’s not. It’s “We the People”. When your vote is ignored or your opinion devalued, express your concern, say something, and get involved.

This information found at Rick Dancer for Secretary of State - Contact Rick Dancer, P.O. Box 71965, Eugene, Oregon 97401.

Allen Alley (R) for Oregon State Treasurer
Over 30 years Allen has built an experience base that spans multiple disciplines from engineering to marketing, venture capital, entrepreneurship and most recently, public service. From January 2007 to March 2008, Allen has served as the deputy chief of staff for the Governor of Oregon. Allen was responsible for overseeing the policy areas of economic development, technology, transportation, workforce training, and energy. With more than 30 years’ experience in a multitude of disciplines, Alley worked to strengthen the bridge between Oregon’s public and private sectors. He said, “I have been very fortunate to have had success building several global companies.”

“I have been passionate about business and our communities. I am very pleased to be able to use both my business experience and passion for my community to help Oregon be a global business leader.” Alley’s resume is exceptionally broad and diverse. In January 1997 he co-founded Pixelworks where he still serves as Chairman of the Board. Pixelworks (NASDAQ:PXLW), a fabless semiconductor company, is a leading provider of system-on-chip ICs for the advanced display industry. Pixelworks' solutions provide the intelligence for advanced televisions, multimedia projectors and flat panel monitors by processing and optimizing video and computer graphics signals to produce high quality images. Many of the world's leading manufacturers of consumer electronics and computer display products utilize our technology to enhance image quality and ease of use of their products. Under Allen’s leadership as President, CEO and now Chairman, Pixelworks achieved many major accomplishments.

He became Executive Editor in early 2006. Roll is also President of the OSU College Republicans and former Communications director for the Oregon Federation of College Republicans.

Rockne Roll is well spoken and maintains a strong presence in a respectful manner. You won’t want to miss any opportunity to watch and hear this upcoming, personable candidate who is running for the State House of Representatives seat for District 16. Vote Rockne Roll – “A vote for the future!”

Jim Thompson for Oregon State Representative, District 23
(Opposed by Republican Craig Pope)
Jim Thompson is a lifelong Oregonian. His wife Helga is a retired science teacher and nationally recognized education consultant. They have two grown children and two grandchildren. Jim and Helga will celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary this year.

Jim has spent his professional life working for laboratories developing technologies that use local agriculture products to treat asthma and allergies. Speaking of improving lives – Jim was also a certified EMT (retired) and previously served on the Chair of the County Fire District #1 Board.

In 2004, Jim was appointed state Representative by our county commissioners when Representative Lane Shettery resigned. While Jim’s appointment was only for a 9 month term he was proud of the work he did to assist people struggling through problems with state government. He gained many new friends among people he individually helped work through challenges with state agencies.

Jim also served on the Monmouth City Council in the 1980’s and is very involved in groups working on health care reform in Oregon. He serves on the Oregon Health Care Volunteer Advisory Committee, Health Safety Net Advisory Committee, and the Public Health Logistics Workgroup.

To this day he is thankful that his current parents decided to adopt and raise a family here in Benton County. They lived in a household located alongside Rock Creek allowing him daily exposure and appreciation of its ecosystem. Chris entered into the Philomath School System at age 6 graduating at age 18. After high school he had the opportunity to fulfill his education goal of attending OSU and achieving a degree in Political Science. He was also accepted at NROTC and served in the US Naval Reserve as an Officer.

Following college, Chris married his high school sweetheart Kristina Olson and they set out to explore the West Coast. Upon completion of active duty, he worked at Sea World of California in the Group Sales Department and studied the ocean. After 4.5 years, they became homesick for Oregon and decided to steer their future back home to raise a family.

A shift delayed their plans for nearly three years when Chris took a position with the San Diego Resort & Convention Hotels. That is where Chris honed his ability to work productively with people in the challenging career of the hospitality industry alongside people of diverse backgrounds and lifestyles.

Home at last, Chris and Kristina settled into experiencing the joys and challenges of parenthood with their daughter Erin (now 10) and became productive citizens of Philomath. Chris was elected Philomath’s Mayor in 2002 and has held that important position to date.

HUMOR & WISDOM

Biker Gang Member
Hat tip: Patrick Wills

A biker is riding by the zoo, when he sees a little girl leaning into the lion's cage. Suddenly, the lion grabs her by the cuff of her jacket and tries to pull her inside to slaughter her, under the eyes of her screaming parents.

The biker jumps off his bike, runs to the cage and hits the lion square on the nose with a powerful punch. Whimpering from the pain, the lion jumps back letting go of the girl, and the biker returns her to her terrified parents, who thank him endlessly.

A New York Times reporter has seen the whole scene, and addressing the biker, says, "Sir, this was the most gallant and brave thing I have ever seen a man do in my whole life."

"Why, it was nothing, really, the lion was behind bars. I just saw this little kid in danger, and acted as I felt right."

"Well, I'll make sure this won't go unnoticed. I'm a journalist from the New York Times, you know, and tomorrow's paper will have this on the first page. What motorcycle do you ride and what political affiliation do you have?"

"A Harley Davidson and I am a Republican."

The journalist leaves.

The following morning the biker buys The New York Times to see if it indeed brings news of his actions, and reads, on first page:

BIKER GANG MEMBER ASSAULTS AFRICAN IMMIGRANT AND STEALS HIS LUNCH

Herbert Hoover Quotes
“My country owes me nothing. It gave me, as it gives every boy and girl, a chance. It gave me schooling, independence of action, opportunity for service and honor. In no other land could a boy from a country village, without inheritance or influential friends, look forward with unbounded hope.”

“Every collectivist revolution rides in on a Trojan horse of ‘Emergency’. It was the tactic of Lenin, Hitler and Mussolini. In the collectivist sweep over a dozen minor countries of Europe, it was the cry of men striving to get on horseback. And ‘emergency’ became the justification of the subsequent steps. This technique of creating emergency is the greatest achievement that demagoguery attains.”

“Freedom conceives that the mind and spirit of man can be free only if he is free to pattern his own life, to develop his own talents, free to earn, to spend, to save, to acquire property as the security of his old age and his family.”

“Honest difference of views and honest debate are not disunity. They are the vital process of policy among free men.”

--Herbert Hoover (1874-1964) 31st President
