NFRW 35th Biennial Convention .

Off to Florida

The National Federation of Republican Women held their 35th Biennial Convention at the Caribe Royale Hotel in Orlando, Florida September 10th - 13th.  Attending from the Coos County Republican Women's Club were Anita Conn, Delegate and Faye Albertson Alternate Delegate at large.  Traveling with them and serving as their Chaperone was Erin Albertson, Faye's granddaughter.  They arrived in Orlando one day early so after going through registration they went to the Epcot Center.  Erin returned the following three days.  It was awesome.  CCRW received the Diamond award in the Club Achievement Awards.  Faye and Anita attended two workshops:  Membership:  "Members are Treasures" and Campaigns:  Why Women Don't Get Elected.  Both were excellent tools of learning.  The singing of the Star Spangled Banner was heard several times but best of all was by seven year old Gina Marie Incandela.  She was diagnosed with a form of autism at age two because she could not talk.  She started singing in her therapy programs and it helped her to overcome her disabilities.  She brought the house down.  She made her first video last fall.  Her first recording was "I Dare to Dream.  She even has her own website.

The distinguished speakers were:  Bob Asztalos, Healthcare Lobbyist; Charlie Crist, Governor of Florida; Jackie Gingrich Cushman, Nationally-Syndicated Columnist and Speaker; Toni Anne Dashnell, President of the Texas FRW; Sharon Day, Sec. of the Republican National Committee; Sue Everhart, Chairman of the Georgia R. Party; Dr, Julio Gonzalez, Board-Certified Orthepedic Surgeon; Carlyle Gregory, Founder of the Carlyle Gregory Company; Vincent Harris, President and Founder of the Harris Media; Angela McGlowan, Founder and CEO, Political Strategies & Insights; Tim Pawlenty, Minnesota's Governor; Frances Rice, Chairman National Black Republican Assn.; Holly Robichaud, Political Consultant/Analyst/Fundraiser; Hazel Roman, Vice President Membership Texas FRW; Ben Sasse, Former Asst. Sec., U.S. Department of Health and Human Services; Michael Steele, Chairman, R. National Committee; Mason Weaver, President, Mason Media Company and Sally West, Healthcare Lobbyist, Florida Retail Federation.  They were all extremely informative speakers. We will tell you about the Bylaws Amendments which were all adopted as presented or adopted as amended at the October meeting.

Elected Officers for 2010 and 2011 were Sue Lynch of Wisconsin, President; Joyce Smith of Indiana, 1st Vice president; Rae Lynne Chornenky of Arizona, 2nd Vice President; Martha Jenkins of North Carolina, 3rd Vice President; Jessie Morton of Louisiana, 4th Vice President, Jane Lane of New Hampshire, Secretary and Brenda Smith of Kansas, Treasurer.  They are all team players and will do a splendid job for the NFRW. My favorite teacher award went to Susan Jordon of Kansas.  The Ronald Reagan Leadership Awatd went to a State President.  The variety of Vendors and Exhibitors was fabulous.

A welcome to Kansas City, Missouri, the location for the 36th Biennial Convention was given by United States Senator, Christopher S. Bond.  It is the city known for it's world-famous barbecue and smooth jazz.  Admire the beauty of the city's more than 200 fountains second most in the world just behind Rome. Faye and I are planning to attend, Lord willing, and invite all of you to join us.  Would we go again, yes, in a heartbeat. — Anita Conn

My Week at Boy's State...

My week at Boy’s State; where to begin? The very first day when we were all separated from our friends and sent off to our cities and counties, filled with random people we had never met and were expected to work with? Or when we were all formed up for the first time and the explained how we were to go about our proceeding? I think I’ll start at the beginning. The first day at Boy’s State, I traveled up to Eugene with three of my close friends and compatriots and expected to pal around with them the whole time, thinking, “I won’t have to branch out and meet new people if I just stay with my friends this whole time. This will be easy.” I was so wrong. When we all were finally registered and assigned to our rooms, we suddenly realized that none of us were even remotely next to the other room-wise; and as I thought with horror the process of meeting new peers, that awkward first time talking to them, sizing them up and finding out if they think your even cool enough to talk to them or whatever, I tredged up to my room on the third floor
After I became acquainted with my new roommate, David Larson, whom I later found out was somewhat of a genius by scoring somewhere very close to a perfect score on the SAT, we all went downstairs to form up in our respective counties and cities. During this first line up, a virtual feeding frenzy of hello’s and handshakes were exchanges and I got to know the basic population of my entire county. But all of this nonsense it just about the uncomfortable scene that was the first day at Boy’s State. I believe that this can be related to this papers topic of “life leadership lessons learned” by the fact that as teenagers, we all think that meeting new people is an interesting, if not for some, grueling, process. We immediately size people up and try to read them and think “how can I work with you?” or “how can you work with or for me?” During Boy’s State I met many interesting people who all worked in very interesting ways.
I like to thing that as a result of going to this seminar for a week, I learned how to adapt and adjust too many peoples’ way of working and processing information. Personally I worked in the House for most of the week and that dealt a lot with sharing all of our ideas and making others see that the positives outweigh the negatives in our bills so that we could get them passed on through the Senate and then to the Governor. I really enjoyed working in the House because it really shows you how as a citizen you can still make a difference in the state or even the country’s laws if law is found reasonable by enough people. Boy’s State truly opened my eyes to the fact that the people still do have the power in this country and that our voices are heard and they matter.
Out of all the leadership seminars that I have attended, this has by far been the most life changing and inspirational. This has been a wonderful experience and I would highly recommend it to any high school junior with leadership potential because it will unleash thet potential. I truly believe that this program has helped me to become a better American citizen and that these leadership skills that I have obtained will serve me well for the rest of my life.

Oh Really...

A vehicle at 15 mpg and 12,000 miles per year uses 800 gallons a year of gasoline. A vehicle at 25 mpg and 12,000 miles per year uses 480 gallons a year. So, the average clunker transaction will reduce US gasoline consumption by 320 gallons per year. They claim 700,000 vehicles – so that's 224 million gallons / year. That equates to a bit over 5 million barrels of oil. 5 million barrels of oil is about ¼ of one day's US consumption. And, 5 million barrels of oil costs about $350 million dollars at $75/bbl. So, we all contributed to spending $3 billion to save $350 million.
How good a deal was that ??? They'll probably do a great job with health care though!!

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

As I am writing my newsletter article, I remembered that today is the last day of summer, so I hope that you all had a great summer. We now have to get ready for fall. With fall comes our Fall board meeting that will be held in Salem this year October 2-4, I will be attending this meeting with at least 2 other members. For our local club fall brings our Elections. During our November meeting, we will also be having elections of officers. Please really consider attending this meeting and run for office. It has been a great pleasure to serve you for the last 4 years but it is time that I give more attention to other things in my life now, so I will not be taking any office with this organization. There is not one single member in our club that would not be able to run for an office and that include President. You have a vast group of knowledgeable and helpful women who will see that you will succeed in any office you may wish to hold. During the summer, we did not have any meeting, but a group of us got together and sent out “care packages” to our troops overseas. We mailed out 60 plus boxes of necessary and needed items to our troop with a cost of $11.95 per box. The majority of the postage was paid with our “caring for America” funds, which is now very low but it was well worth it. We have already received several thank you from our troops. For those of you who helped my appreciation and heartfelt thanks goes out too you. See you at our next meeting — Cathy Mann, President.

Quote of the Month!

"A veteran is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to The United States of America for an amount of up to and including my life." - Author Unknown

Fellow Republican Women & Associates:

The collection of dues began at the October meeting.  If you haven't already paid your dues you can mail a check in the amount of $30.00 to

Treasurer, Sharon Golder
2541 Sheridan Avenue,
North Bend, Oregon 97459.

It would be so nice if all dues were paid by March 31st. Dues not current by this date will no longer receive the CCRW newsletter.

In order to receive credit on the Achievement Awards program, we must have eleven more members in 2009 than we had at the end of 2007.  It is a two year program.  Help!

Ever since that program began, Coos County Republican Women have earned the Diamond Award and we most certainly want to do so again this time.

Remember anyone can join the Coos County Republican Women as an Associate Member if you live outside Coos County. We would love to have you. Associate members pay $15.00 and get one of our newsletters each month. Just send your check to Sharon at the above address.
