![]() When their school closed, these girls were left without any hope of completing their education. A Canadian/Malawian partnership, formed between Christie Johnson (that's me!) and Memory Chazeza, two volunteer teachers from their school, has helped these girls realize their dreams. After 5 years of fundraising in Canada, support from Memory in Malawi, and hard work on the part of the girls, all 22 of these amazing girls have now completed their Form 4 (grade 12) education! Four of them have earned full scholarships from the Malawian government to attend university, another two girls are attending the Natural Resources College in Malawi, and the other 16 have completed 2-year training courses in a trade of their choice and are beginning to start their own businesses. This is an almost unheard of achievement! ![]() Bring On The Next Challenge! Conquering the spirits on Mt. Mulanje, July 2004
Most girls in Malawi drop out of school before they reach Secondary School even if they are intelligent, hardworking and committed to their education. Secondary Schools are rare and expensive. Girls are pressured by their families to get married very young, particularly if the family is very poor. If a family has limited money, the boys are selected to attend over the girls. In many schools, girls are subjected to abuse from their male teachers and classmates. The list goes on and on. The fact that these girls managed to complete their education is a testiment to their determination, courage, and hard work. Having tuition supplied from Canada removed only one of the barriers to completing school. The rest of these barriers were dealt with by Memory Chazeza and the girls themselves. Now, after completing her own B.Ed. degree, Memory Chazeza has decided to make this project ... the education of young Malawian women, her life's work. And I have decided to do everything in my power to help her.

1/2-Column Section (1A) This 1/2-column operates in tandem with the 1/2-column to the right. These columns don't operate independently; they are both either on or off together. You can add a download link anywhere on your page, like this: download THIS MS Word file Check our HELP GUIDE to find out more about downloading documents. |
1/2-Column Section (1B) These columns operate in tandem because of the way HTML tables work. If you want your entire Home Page to be in text that goes across the whole page (no 1/2-column sections), just turn off the two tandem sections and put all your material into the full-page sections, separating text with headings. Use your HTML coding for paragraph breaks and font size and color changes. Or you can do your entire page in two columns by turning off all your full-page sections and using only your tandem sections. Notice that we have turned off the second 1/2-column section below this one so you can see what it looks like to turn a section off.
