MESSAGE FROM CAROLYN OAKLEY, LCRW PRESIDENT
Wow, where has the summer gone? I can not believe how quickly this year has passed.

Linn County Republican Women enjoyed a wonderful summer barbecue at the home of Rep. Andy and Pam Olson. We had 70 attendees, including the future First Lady of the State of Oregon Chris Love Dudley...her actual name. It was an awesome evening.

We have a great speaker planned for September 22, 2010...Senator Frank Morse. He will speak promptly at 12:00 noon. Everyone is welcome...bring guests. We meet at Pop's Branding Iron Restaurant.

Now...we are approaching potentially the most important election of our life time. As Republicans, we have a great opportunity to replace some of the D's that have caused us so much grief, heartache, and money. It will take all of use working together to make it happen. If your primary candidate did not survive the Primary, life goes on. If you remember, I did not win the first time I entered the campaign trail. We need everyone supporting our Republican candidates. This is a wonderful opportunity for us to clean house...and your help is necessary.

We have a Republican headquarters...228 5th Ave SW at Broadalbin in downtown Albany. Jo Rae Perkins and her helpers have done a great job of putting the office together. The surroundings are very nice. Now, it is your turn to help...call JoRae, 541-979-5395, and schedule a morning or afternoon to help. Your time can make a difference.

I look forward to working with each of you in the weeks and months to come. Let's get our Republicans elected and take back our state - and then our nation. Thank you - to each and every one of you - for all you do.

Let's get to work and spread the word to "Remember in November"...our future depends on it.

Regards,

Carolyn

Ramblings of lst Vice President

4th of July Parade in Harrisburg was fun for LCRW 1st VP Mary Grimes as she drove her car with LCRW magnetic signs and décor in the parade and passed out candy to the hordes of children along the hour long parade route. Harrisburg is a Republican strong-hold and it is always fun to hear them applaud for our presence. Also, Jo Rae Perkins drove her car all decorated in red/white/blue representing the Linn Co Republican Central Committee. It is always fun to see a town swell from 5,000 to 15,000 over the course of the day…what a traffic jam!!!

July 12th LCRW Picnic we all met at Andy and Pam Olson’s lovely home for our annual event. There was lots of great dishes and desserts along with some fun music from the lovely LCRW ukulele and songstress’. Then, we got to hear from Rep Andy Olson and, what Mary Grimes thinks is the best speech ever, from Sen Frank Morse. The positive vibes from governor candidate Chris Dudley has energized the republican candidates, especially Sen Morse. We also heard from other candidates: Kelly Lovelace, Mike Spasaro, Jo Rae Perkins, John Lindsay, Chris Telfer, and a great introduction to our future Oregon First Lady, Chris Love Dudley, speaking on behalf of her husband, Chris Dudley. How elegant and tasteful she is and really gracious. It was a special evening.

On July 14th the LCRCC had meeting at Linn Co Fair and Expo and adjourned to set up the . It was a great idea and worked well. Lots of helpers this year to help set up all the décor Mary Grimes provided along with more items from Jo Rae Perkins. Then, we all took turns manning the booth during the fair, including Renee Smith and all the candidates. Thanks goes to them all. It was well attended and fun…even the democrats came over and sat down with us from time to time…they were bored. Imagine that!

(...continue, right column)

75th Anniversary Diamond Jubilee was attended by LCRW 1st VP Mary Grimes at the Salem Creekside Golf Club on August 14th. The group was addressed by Republican Senate Leader Ted Ferrioli of John Day,Sen Chris Telfer of Bend who is running for state Treasurer, Republican House Leader Bruce Hanna and video presentations from Congressman Greg Walden, Former Governor Victor Atiyeh, and Former Senator Gordon Smith. We had a nice speech from National Federation of Republican Women President Sue Lynch who reminisced her time working for a congressman in Washington DC and remembered working with former Congressman Bob Smith who was in attendance. Lots of hugs, kisses and awards of remembrance went out to past presidents of ORFW as well as regional representatives. From LCRW was Sharon Schmidt, with her cohorts Deanna Smith and Fran Millican who decorated the tables, room, hallway and just outside the front door. The flowers and décor were lovely. Sharon’s son Mike Schmidt was the DJ and kept things moving even stepping in with a microphone when the batteries died on the club’s mike. Everyone was pumped when Chris Love Dudley gave the closing remarks giving us all hope for a republican governor and lots of republicans in the legislature in the November General Election.

August 27th & 28, Oregon Republican Convention, LCRW 1st VP Mary Grimes was Bonus Delegate to the Oregon Republican Convention held in Tigard at the Washington Square Embassy Suites. While at the event during the day only and returning home in between, she was able to hear from Jim Huffman, Chris Telfer, and Chris Dudley. All got lots of applause and especially Dudley…standing ovation. Chairman Bob Tiernan ran a tight meeting keeping things on schedule. The best part was being part of a caucus and of interest to Mary Grimes was Natural Resources and Industry. “I got to help write the 2011 Oregon Republican Platform! That is huge!!! In 9.1 “…Oregonians for the benefit of Oregon,.“ I got to help write and I got to put one word, “all”, in 9.2. I fought to keep “…preservation of family farms.” in 9.3 but the whole paragraph was really worked over good and completely rewritten. I lost out. But, all in all, how many folks get to say they helped write the Oregon Republican Platform? Huh?? But, now I can say that. It is huge!!!,“ said Mary. Tim Smith from Harney County was the caucus chair and did a great job. The man was really knowledgeable…later on we found out he was on a bazillion ag boards including water resources with an impressive natural resource background. So, when we got to the election of the ORP Vice Chair and Tim Smith and Jamie Germond were the candidates, Smith got Mary’s vote and he was elected, thanks to Jo Rae Perkins leaving early and giving Mary chance to vote. Tim Smith will do us a great job…fundraising will be his focus. But, let’s back up to the parliamentarian, the son of Tim Smith, Tyler. He kept the House moving along with motions, seconds, calling for the question and debate. After awhile, it was decided at first break to find out if Tyler was a student lawyer, yes indeed he was…Willamette University. He did a great job! He is almost as smart as his dad. It was a great time.

September 11th your 1st VP slept in after working on newsletter to 5:37 a.m….got on a roll and forgot to look at time…so missed all but the last minutes of the LCRCC Patriot’s Picnic at Monteith Park. It was learned that just about every LCRW member was in attendance, so they need to tell 1st VP what all took place….like lots of candidates speaking, lots of food, and lots of red, white, and blue decorating the pavilion….some 70 people in attendance. It broke up about 5:30 p.m. so everyone could have time to get over to the Linn County Courthouse for the 9-11 Observance at 7 p.m.

9-11 Observance,1st VP was given funds to purchase the materials for the 9-11 “Remembrance Ribbons” that Mary Grimes hands out each 9-11 Observance at the Courthouse on September 11th. Some ribbons were left over as well as pins so with new materials were able to create total of 115 and all were handed out. The event was organized by the Albany American Legion Post 10 with assistance from Lebanon Post 51. Joining in were the Albany City Fire Dept, Albany City Police Dept along with US Marine Youth in Training and Boy Scout of America local troops, Albany Mayor, Sharon Konopa, who read a proclamation; and the women’s Auxiliary Unit 10 from Albany who handed out small American flags. Also joining in was a pastor, US Navy Commander, Co Commissioner; and presenting the colors were the VFW Post 584. The event ended shortly after 8 p.m.

Since this time, there is an idea that the LCRW could possibly get involved with this event and maybe sponsor some part of it. Mary Grimes is very much in favor of this idea and would be glad to chair. Think it over and we can talk with Albany AL Post 10 to see what we can do to keep this event going.

Profiles/Thumbnail Sketches of each Candidate LCRW need to know about…
Kelly Lovelace - Candidate for Oregon House District 11

Issue of Concern - Taxes and Regulations: Oregon cannot continue on its current path of raising taxes, imposing more and more regulations on small businesses and losing family-wage jobs. “Ordinary people make the world work,” Lovelace said. “Show us a problem and we can figure things out. That’s how most things get done.”

Sherrie Sprenger - Candidate for re-election Oregon House District 17

Issue of concern - Jobs: Rep. Sherrie Sprenger is currently the Vice-Chair of the House Education Committee and on the Revenue Committee and is a known advocate for jobs, the economy and common sense “live within your means” government budgeting. She works to bring common sense to each discussion in the legislature.

Michael Spasaro- Candidate for Oregon Senate, District 6

Issue of concern - Career Politicians and Government spending 1. Career Politicians; a. The one most destructive aspect of our government today is, “POWERFUL CARRER POLITICIANS” that simple statement is wrong on so many levels. Our forefathers gave power to the people, not the politicians. How did this go so wrong that they now have the power over the people? 2. Spending; a. I can’t spend money I don’t have, you can’t spend money you don’t have, how can government spend money we don’t have?

Thumbnail Sketch:

Frank Morse - Candidate for re-election Oregon Senate, District 8

Issue of Concern - Better Business Environment and Government Cost Change:The most significant issues facing us today is abundantly clear to me that we must make Oregon a more inviting and rewarding place to do business if we ever hope to improve employment, wages, and our economy. I also believe that the cost of government must change, focusing on process improvement. And, we must do a better job of saving money to fund schools, public safety and care for our most vulnerable when the economy falters.

Arnold Poole - Candidate for Linn County Circuit Court Judge

Issue of Concern - Court’s protecting children: For me as a potential judge it is the court’s responsibility to protect children. I have sadly seen parents use their children as pawns to gain some sort of advantage over their former partner far too often. Regrettably, I have also seen lawyers help those parents do that as well in their representation of their particular client. However, where as lawyers are required to advocate on behalf of their client, judges enjoy the responsibility of making a decision that is “in the best interest” of the children.

Thomas McHill - Candidate for Linn Co Circuit Court Judge

Issue of Concern - Replacement should have range in law experience:“…Linn County should choose a replacement who has a wide range of experience. My practice has provided me a depth of practical experience that is unmatched by any other candidate for Judge, including criminal, civil, family, municipal and appellate law.”

Thumbnail sketch:

Michael Wynhausen - Candidate for Linn Co Circuit Court Judge

Issue of concern - Public Safety and Offender Accountability:Due to a strong sense of impartial justice and personal responsibility, Michael Wynhausen will serve us well. He has spend his entire career striving to promote public safety and offender accountability while fighting for the rights of crime victims.

(...M. Wynhausen continues, right column...)

Art Robinson - Candidate for US House of Representatives, 4th Congressional District

Issue of concern - Reduce federal taxes and regulations and conform new laws to US Constitution: Restore American jobs and economic prosperity by immediately reducing federal taxes and regulations that are crippling American businesses and industries and causing some to move abroad. We need to revive domestic industries and facilitate industries that have moved abroad…bring them back. We need to require that every Congressional action conform to the U.S. Constitution in every respect. His goal is to protect and restore the nation's freedoms.

Jim Huffman - Candidate for US Senate, Oregon Congressional District

Issue of concern - Reduce government, lower taxes, thus business can create jobs:We need to lower taxes with less red tape so that we can pursue the American dream. Reduce government spending so our children do not have the crushing debt we created and we need government that is transparent and accountable to the people. We need to adhere to the Constitutional principles of limited government and personal freedom. When we raise taxes on small businesses and bind them up in knots of unnecessary red tape, it’s only natural that mom-and-pop shops are going to close, family businesses are going to shutter, and hard-working men and women are going to find themselves unemployed.

Chris Dudley - Candidate for Governor

Issue of concern - Education:As our economy strengthens, the Oregon Future Fund Scholarship would be phased in and available for all high school graduates on a “GPA” or “as needs” basis for four years in our state public college’s or universities or $3,000 annually to one of our states private colleges or universities technical/professional programs. The OFFS program will complement the restructuring of our university system and contribute to our state’s economic development.

Chris Telfer - Candidate for Oregon Treasurer

Issue of Concern - State should operate like business:The state should operate and budget just as a family or business is required to do. Telfer has seen the changes, growth, and struggles over the last 33 years she‘s lived in Oregon. The budget is in disarray and she is now working on solutions. As a CPA, Chris Telfer is the only individual currently serving in the Oregon Legislature with financial expertise. Her input and opinions are highly valued by her fellow legislators and when she speaks, they listen.

Oregonian for 33 years; Certified Public Accountant, 30 years; Small business owner, CPA practice catering to non-profit organizations; former Bend Oregon City Councilwoman; Republican State Senator, District 27, (currently).

Jo Rae Perkins - Candidate for Albany Mayor

Issue of Concern - Albany’s Anti-business Environment:anti-business sentiment in Albany, which is evidenced in part by the increased building permit fees of 50% for commercial permits and 20% on residential permits.

Thumbnail Sketch:

John Lindsey - Candidate for re-election to Linn County Commissioner

Issue of Concern - Group Homes:An important issue of concern escalating in rural Oregon is the continued transfer of dangerous mental patients into neighborhoods. The governor and legislature has demanded that this take place. This is done without notification to citizens or law enforcement. Not only is this extremely expensive to do but it is also dangerous. Here in Linn County the state has created a “private prison” east of Lebanon without concern of the county. From examination of property deeds, I have determined that several more of these jails are going to be constructed in rural Linn County without permission (I am not supposed to know about this). Advocates for these jails claim they are “group homes”, they are not. By using the term “group home”, Oregon land use allows them to go forward without hearing or notification. Rural jails are becoming the preferred site of state and employees. The federal government and courts have stated when a person is mandated to reside in a specific place and cannot come and go freely by themselves, it is incarceration. These are jails. Group homes for the mentally handicapped or drug addictions are extremely cost effective and successful. The state is off loading serial rapist and murders into our neighborhoods under lies and false pretense, and most politicians are uncomfortable talking about it. I am not.
