Infants are born with strong needs to be nurtured and to remain physically close to the primary caregiver (usually the mother) during the first few years of life. Their emotional, physical, and neurological development is greatly enhanced when these basic needs are met consistently and appropriately. These needs can be summarized as proximity, protection, and predictability.

To help guide parents along their journey, API created The Eight Principles of Attachment Parenting. These guidelines are founded on research in attachment theory and are known to be effective in helping children develop secure attachments.

The 8 Principals of Attachment Parenting:

  • Prepare for pregnancy, birth and parenting (more on Preparation)

  • Feed with love and respect (more on Feeding)

  • Respond with sensitivity (more on Responding)

  • Use nurturing touch (more on Touch)

  • Engage in nighttime parenting (more on Nighttime Parenting)

  • Provide consistent loving care (more on Consistent Care)

  • Practice positive discipline (more on Positive Disciplince)

  • Strive for balance in personal and family life (more on Balance)
