Rosemary Nelson was a renowned rights lawyer in the north of Ireland. She was murdered on Monday, March 15, 1999 when a loyalist booby-trap bomb attached to her car exploded, severing both her legs and causing extensive abdominal injuries.

Pat Finucane, a human rights lawyer from Belfast who was murdered in front of his wife and children on 12 February 1989 by the pro-British UDA. Pat had successfully challenged the British Government over several important human rights cases.

On May 8, 1997, 25 year old father of two Robert Hamill (a third child was born after his death) died from injuries received from an attack on him in Portadown city centre on April 27, 1997. A gang of up to 30 loyalists savagely beat and kicked Mr. Hamill and Gregory Girvan while their two female companions attempted to intervene.
