Message from Frank Kovacs, NCC President and the NCC Executive Board.

HAPPY 75TH ANNIVERSARY TO US!

January 2012 marks the beginning of PASR's 75th Anniversary.

Happy Diamond Anniversary!

PASR was established in 1937 and is a pioneer of non-profit voluntary membership organizations nationally, having helped establish both the National Teachers' Association in 1947 and the nation's largest senior organization, THE AARP, in 1958.

Currently we have 76 local chapters. Most locals are located in PA as part of twelve geographic regions. NCC is part of Region 2, which also includes Berks, Carbon, Lehigh, and Schuylkill Counties. Region 13 exists to service out-of-state members in Delaware, Florida, Maryland, New Jersey, and the Carolinas.

Remember: anyone who is now receiving a pension from the Pennsylvania School Employee Retirement System is welcome to join. Click on www.pasr.org for additional info.

NCC-PASR HISTORY

As we announced a few months ago, January 2012 marked the beginning of PASR's 75th Anniversary. This month we thought we’d give you some history of our chapter, which is nearly as old as the state organization:

  • 1941 – On November 14, The Retired Teachers Association of Northampton County was formed
  • 1964 – On October 24, Northampton County Retired Teachers Association became part of the Pennsylvania State Retired Teachers Association
  • 1975 – On October 15, the name was changed to Northampton County Retired Public School Employees Association of the Pennsylvania State Retired Teachers Association
  • 1985 – On October 23, the name was changed to Northampton County Chapter of the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees

75TH ANNIVERSARY ACTIVITY
In our last newsletter we asked for a $0.75 donation from our members to give to the Hospitality Committee of the Allentown Veterans' Outpatient Clinic to help provide coffee and pastries to clients keeping appointments at the facility. Thanks to your generosity we sent $95. Thomas Ortwein sent $25 from his home in sunny Florida. At our luncheon June Blair won the first prize in the 60/40 drawing, and she donated the entire amount of her winnings - $23. Ruth Gafford gave us a check for $10. We thank the vets for their service and hope they enjoy the goodies on us. Again -- thanks to all who donated. Certainly we can't have a celebration without a party including cake, presents, and charter renewal. Also, as part of the celebration, our chapter will award a special 75th Anniversary $500 scholarship to a deserving public school student. Other chapters will have the same opportunity. These scholarships are being funded by monies bequeathed to PASR.

NCC-PASR’s Executive Board decided that this chapter’s scholarship will be given to a child, grandchild, or great-grandchild of a chapter member, based on financial need, scholarship, and demonstrated will to succeed. The applicant must currently be either a senior at a public high school in Northampton County or a graduate of such a school who is a student at an institution of higher education. The application for this scholarship can be found in the newsletter mailing. If a member of your family meets these requirements, please complete the last three lines of the application before passing it on to him/her. Only original applications will be accepted and must be received no later than April 1, 2012. If there are any questions about the scholarship or the process that will be followed, please contact Ruby Ifkowitz at 610-767-1494 or drifko@ptd.net.

We hope you help make this a special NCC-PASR year!

VETERANS’ SALUTE

At the luncheon on April 12, we honored members who are veterans. In keeping with that theme, Joseph Christ, a member of our NCC-PASR Executive Board, offered the main presentation “Nazi POWs in America.”
Also appearing was Judy Cannavo, a representative of Historic Bethlehem Partnership, who spoke briefly about openings that organization has available for museum teachers.

Because the year 2012 marks the 75th Anniversary of PASR, NCC will be doing activities to celebrate the occasion. When you came to the April luncheon, you were asked to please bring $0.75 to donate to an Anniversary Fund. Our Community Service Committee will use your donations to buy donuts and pastries for the hospitality folks to serve to veterans who have appointments at the Department of Veterans Affairs’ Allentown Outpatient Clinic.

At the April luncheon meeting we honored our members who are veterans, but and we thank you for your assistance in identifying them.
