Archaeology is the study of people

...based on the material they left behind.

Man has occupied western Pennsylvania at least since the end of the last ice age. Areas where humans lived, worked and left material evidence of their occupation are called SITES.

Prehistoric Sites (occupied before written history in the western hemisphere) are Indian Sites. Flint arrowheads, stone tools and pottery are items that can be found on these sites.

Historic Sites (occupied after written history) can include Indian Sites also, after they began trading with the white man. Colonial and sites relating to the development of the United States are also historic sites. items found on historic sites can be items manufactured for farm, home, or industrial use.

Archaeological sites are being destroyed at an alarming rate.

Ohio Valley Chapter No. 22  is one of many local chapters of the Society for Pennsylvania Archaeology, Inc. located throughout the state, where interested persons like yourself meet every month or so for informative programs about archaeology and related fields, and to share questions and answers about our prehistoric and historic heritage.

Active membership entitles one to full voting rights in the chapter. Members are also encouraged to join The Society for PA Archaeology, Inc., our parent organization.
