Winter in Clarion County

Redbank Creek, New Bethlehem

In the 1920’s when Redbank Creek was frozen over, cars were driven on it from Mayport to New Bethlehem. It was much easier to drive the creek because the roads were so bad.

Brave souls, our ancestors!

These photos are from the Society's Archives.

Some winters are snowy, some winters are icy & some winters are bitter cold, but rarely are they mild.

FOURTH of JULY FLAGPOLE DEDICATION and FLAG RAISING CEREMONY
at LICKING
~ By Betty Elza, CCHS Life Member ~

Mary Lea Lucas, Clarion County Historical Society Director and Curator,
before the ceremony July 4, 2011

Clarion American Legion Post 66, which donated the flagpole and flag to Licking and the Clarion County Historical Society, was responsible for the ceremony. Members, including the color guard, are pictured here preparing for the noon service.

Raising the Flag
In the background you can see some of the hundreds of tall,
stately, cream-colored yucca plants in bloom in the cemetery.

Following the ceremony, Mary Lea greeted all those present, thanked them for coming, and introduced some people in the audience. She thanked CCHS Board Member Terry Courson for all his work in restoring the windows in Licking Church and beginning the process of priming the building for painting. She acknowledged and extended a heartfelt thank you to the Duane Harriger family for accepting the responsibility of caring for the grounds around the church and cemetery. She noted that Betty Elza, Regent of the Clarion County Chapter, DAR was in attendance and that the Chapter had placed memorial markers in the cemetery for five Revolutionary War Patriots. She then read an article, "The Price They Paid" about what happened to the men who signed the Declaration of Independence and left the crowd with the thought-provoking reminder that freedom isn't free.

Then she introduced local resident Todd Curll.
The 90-year old Curll, pictured here, is displaying and talking about the photograph he's holding that dates to 1928. It was taken at the 125 Anniversary Celebration of Licking. He was seven years old at the time. Included in the photograph are several of his family members including his grandfather, who is buried at Licking. He told a story that drew laughter from the crowd. He said he wanted to be up front in the picture to show off his new long pants because he was so proud of them.

Also in attendance was a former minister of Licking and Cherry Run churches, Robert I. Moore.
His daughter, Morna K. Moore of Rochester, NY, accompanied him and shared some family and church history. She said Licking was her fathers charge until it merged with Cherry Run,
then he was at Cherry Run until it disbanded.

Mary Lea, with outstretched hand, moves to greet and thank American Legion Post members for the celebration.

Mary Lea talked with American Legion Post 66 members and guests.

After the service, attendees took some time to converse with one another
and to visit the cemetery.

Terry Courson, third from the left, showed guests some of the photographs of his restoration work at Licking Church.
