Richard L. Ziegler
Receipent of Archey Award 2006

Mr. Richard L. Ziegler is a member of the French Creek Archaeology Society. He has been a past and present member of the Society for Pennsylvania Archaeology beginning in 1955.

He has recorded more than 110 archaeological sites using the P.A.S. S. system. Included in his excavations are rock shelters, riverine village sites, burial mounds and historic sites including iron furnaces, historic forts and early residences.

Mr. Ziegler and Mr. Densmore published three articles in the Pennsylvania Archaeologist. Their efforts at collecting data, interpreting excavated materials and sharing the information with the archaeological community is extemporary.

His desire to educate and communicate his archaeological knowledge included speaking with local Boy Scout troops, the Kiwanis, the local Historical Society and other public service organizations. Interviews where given to newspaper reporters providing a wider understanding of the archaeological history of Venango County.

Because of his conviction that archaeological artifacts should be shared with the public, Mr. Ziegler donated a sizeable portion of his personal collection to the citizens of Venango County. Arrangements were made with the county commissioners to have a showcase constructed. Thousand of artifacts continue to be on display in the main hallway of the Venango County Courthouse.

For over 50 years Mr. Ziegler has shared his passion for Pennsylvania's archaeology. Through his dedication and enthusiasm, he has nurtured the interest of family and friends. Several have pursued careers in history or archaeology, including Dr. Sue Ann Curtis, his son Richard Ziegler, and grandson Nathan Ziegler. Neal Densmore, Jim Woodring, Leon Eisenman , Lynne Baer, Dewayne Greenlee, Bill Black and many others have been inspired to become avocational archaeologists.
