IMPORTANT NEWS FOR BIRD OWNERS

BIRD FOOD RECALL NOTICE:

We wanted to contact you today to let you know what we have learned about pet food recalls that may impact your parrots.

This report will be short and to the point, so that you can go check that your parrots are NOT eating any of the foods that have been recalled. We first learned about this recall from the New York Bird Club.

Some of the products are not parrot related, but some of you may well have hamsters, gerbils, or other pets that might use the listed products, so I wanted to include the entire set of facts.

Here is the information on which products are involved:

RECALLS AND FIELD CORRECTIONS

a) Wild Harvest Fruit and Honey Cockatiel, Recall # V-021-2008;

b) Ecotrition Tropical Fruit and Honey Bars, Recall # V-022-2008;

c) Wild Harvest Hamster, Gerbil, Mouse, Rat Honey Cakes, Recall # V-023-2008 CODE, Lot: 07096, Lot: 07108, and Lot: 07096

RECALLING FIRM/MANUFACTURER:

United Pet Group Inc., Cincinatti, Ohio

REASON FOR RECALL:

Pet treats were imported from China. LOS-DO sampled the treats and they tested positive for melamine. The shipments were placed on hold for redelivery but were erroneously shipped into commerce. Over 54,000 units have been distributed in the United States in the States of Arizona, California, Florida, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Texas, and Washington.

So, if you purchase cockatiel seed mix or fruit and honey treat bars, please take a moment right now to check what brand you have on hand and make certain none of the products you are using are involved in this recall.

Your bird's life may depend on it!

DANGER: CARDBOARD PAPER TOWEL AND TOILET PAPER ROLLS

Many of us have allowed our parrots to play with and shred paper towel cores after we've used the entire paper towel supply from the core.

This has appeared to be harmless and we were very shocked to learn that it could be harmful!
Had It not been for an email from Kimberly-Clark, one of the manufacturers of paper towels and toilet paper, We might not have believed this information.

Zinc toxicity is very serious and can kill a parrot if it is severe.
Kidney damage, upset digestion, feather plucking and increased water intake are all signs of zinc poisoning.
Other symptoms include vomiting, loss of appetite and larger than usual green droppings. Sudden death, unfortunately, is another sign.

Cockatoos are especially sensitive but no parrot is exempt. If you do, however, have a cockatoo that plucks feathers and nothing has resolved the problem, ask your vet to check for zinc in the parrot's blood.

Be aware of zinc toxicosis (a big word for zinc poisoning) in parrots, but had always heard that the most common cause was older cages or the use of galvanized wire in aviaries.
Using washers containing zinc to attach toys to a parrot's cages is another potential cause of zinc poisoning that I had heard of.
However,We were shocked to learn that the adhesive used to attach the first sheet of paper towel to the cardboard core has resulted in some parrots being diagnosed with zinc toxicosis. This same adhesive can be present in toilet paper rolls also.
Kimberly-Clark's statement regarding this adhesive says:
"Although the core glue is safe for its intended use, it is not intended to be ingested. It is not food grade and does not meet indirect food contact regulations.

Therefore, we cannot recommend that it be used with pets".

NETWORKING

FRESH START IS CURRENTLY NETWORKING WITH OTHER ANIMAL RESCUES
LOCATED THROUGHOUT PENNSYLVANIA AS WELL AS IN OHIO, NEW JERSEY, DELAWARE, MARYLAND AND NEW YORK.
WE ALSO ARE PARTNERING UP WITH SOME GREAT COMPANIES, ORGANIZATIONS AND ANIMAL PEOPLE TO BE ABLE TO HELP EVEN MORE BIRDS IN NEED.

OUR OBJECTIVE WITH JOINING FORCES IS TO BE ABLE TO COVER A LARGER AREA AND BE ABLE TO REACH EVEN MORE PEOPLE AND BIRDS IN NEED OF OUR HELP.

FRESH START WILL CONTINUE TO SERVE ANY BIRD FAMILY IN NEED WITH THE SAME EXCEPTIONAL CARE FOR OUR DOMESTIC BIRD FRIENDS AS WE HAVE DONE SINCE OPENING THE RESCUE IN APRIL 1999, WHILE ALSO USING OUR RESOURCES TO HELP OTHER ANIMAL GROUPS IN THEIR EFFORTS.

OUR MISSION AND GOAL

IS DEDICATED TO PROVIDING LIFELONG SUPPORT AND GUIDANCE TO OUR ADOPTIVE FAMILIES AND THEIR BIRD FRIENDS.

OUR GOAL IS TO EDUCATE THE PUBLIC ON THE SPECIAL NEEDS OF OUR FEATHERED FRIENDS AS WELL AS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF BEING A BIRD OWNER.

FRESH START IS AVAILABLE TO ANY BIRD FAMILY IN NEED, BY HELPING WITH ANY ISSUES, PROBLEMS, BEHAVIORS OR CONCERNS PERTAINING TO DOMESTIC BIRDS.
IT IS FAR BETTER FOR THESE LOVING AND SOCIAL CREATURES TO STAY IN THEIR HOME, IF AT ALL POSSIBLE.
SOMETIMES BEHAVIORAL PROBLEMS ARE EASILY FIXED, AND YOU MAY JUST NEED TO LEARN NEW TACTICS FOR CORRECTIONS THAT YOU MAY NOT HAVE THOUGHT OF.

IF YOU FEEL YOU ARE UNABLE TO CONTINUE TO CARE FOR YOUR BIRD, OUR DOOR IS ALWAYS OPEN, NO MATTER WHAT ISSUES YOUR BIRD MAY HAVE.

Thank You,
The Fresh Start Rescue Team,

I am a Bird Rescuer

My job is to assist God's creatures. I was born with the need to fulfill their needs. I take in new family members without plan, thought or selection. I have bought bird food with my last dime.. I have patted a mangy head with a bare hand.. I have hugged someone vicious and afraid.. I have fallen in love a thousand times and I have cried into the feathers of a lifeless body.

I have Animal Friends and friends who have animal friends. I don't often use the word "pet". I notice those lost and thrown to the road side And my heart aches. I will hand raise a finch. And make friends with a macaw. I know of no creature unworthy of my time and love.

I want to live forever if there aren't animals in Heaven- But I believe there are. Why would God make something so perfect and leave it behind? We may be master of the animals, But the animals have mastered themselves- Something people still haven't learned.

War and Abuse makes me hurt for the world, But a rescue that makes the news gives me hope for mankind. We are a quiet but determined army- And making a difference ever day.

There is nothing more necessary than warming an orphan, nothing more rewarding than saving a life... No higher recognition than watching them thrive. There is no greater joy than seeing them play when only days ago, were too weak to eat.

    I am a Bird Rescuer-
    My work is never done,
    My home is never quiet,
    My wallet is always empty,
But my heart is always full.
In the game of life, we have already won!!
