Free to a Good Home! A Death Sentence for your Pet! Now you know why shelters and rescue groups always charge "adoption fees" for pets, "Free" is all too often seen as "worthless" in the eye of the beholder! Please, don’t offer your pets FREE to a good home unless you just don’t care what happens to them. If you must give up your pet please contact a rescue group or your local shelter for advice and assistance. Volunteers who work endless hours to save pets from the horrors of abuse, neglect, and homelessness bring this message to you so you will think twice when giving up a pet ! PLEASE, YOUR PET IS COUNTING ON YOU TO DO THE RIGHT THING,DONT WE OWE THEM THAT MUCH! KEEPING YOUR PET SAFE Never place a “Free to a Good Home Ad” on a web site or in a newspaper. Exhaust every avenue to keep your pet with you. Don’t let your pet roam free in the neighborhood. Keep your pet on a leash when walking him. Don’t let your pet be visible from the street. Put a padlock on your gate to your backyard to further ensure their safety. Never leave pets unattended at any time. Never leave pets outside a store or in the car to wait for you. POEM A Poem by a Bird Adoptor, I had hints, I had advice, I had cautions, but nobody told me how owning birds would completely take over my life.Nobody told me I'd become a bird store junky, standing at the checkout counter in bliss until half way home and then wondering just how long it would be before the Visa came in or husband asked for the check book to balance the account. Nobody told me my husband would say, "I think you ought to stay away from the bird store. You seem to have lost all control". Hmmmm ... Me? How did this happen? Nobody told me when I saw a particular cage for $595.00 I might think wow that IS a good deal. Or when someone mentioned a $4,000.00 cage I could see the reason some people might need a cage like that. Nobody told me that I would be up at 7:00am on Sunday morning peeling yams and apples to cook so they would be added into a corn meal and wheat cereal mash. Nobody told me I wouldn't mind when feeding that mash to my bird he would head shake his head with that mixture flying in every direction, on to my carpet, on to my clothes, on to my face. Nobody told me how much money I would spend on food, how much of it I would buy and just how little my birds would like any of it. Nobody mentioned that once you own birds you need an extra freezer in the garage. Nobody told me that I would spend an hour standing with my hand on a tree branch watching for hawks so my bird could hang out in the sun and chew new buds. Nobody told me I would be on the computer at all hours talking and reading about birds. Nobody told me I would make friends I will never see and that I would worry about them and theirs as if family. Nobody told me I would check my son's bed for old or damaged stuffed animals to give to the bird like that stuffed cat. He never really liked it and it is missing a leg anyway. Nobody told me I would do two extra loads of laundry a week with bird towels and sheets. Nobody told me every morning I would put a sheet over my covers, litter my bed with weird wooden things, stuffed animals, leather pieces, apple slices and peanuts. Nobody told me just how much he would squawk. Nobody told me I would come to hear differences in the tone and shrillness. Nobody told me I not only could tell the difference but would learn when to respond or that my husband would say it's okay, this is his good morning happy time he will settle down. Nobody could have known that my husband would say, so he squawks it is less and less the kids will deal with it. Nobody told me I could play with him like I do. That he would chase me and I would chase him. That he would be just as exuberant as a puppy. Nobody told me my husband would rather snuggle with the bird in the morning than make his bagel. Nobody told my husband would make an extra half a bagel to share with the birds. Nobody could have convinced me that this same husband would agree to shower with the birds in the bathroom (for the steam) and then without urging, could be heard to play peek-a-boo while drying off. Nobody told me how much I would sing out loud. Nobody could have guessed those songs would be golden oldies like You Are My Sunshine or songs from musicals. Nobody told how excited I would get to come home after 6 hrs. and see seed thrown all over the place. Yea! He ate while I was gone. Nobody told me that I would not resent vacuuming twice a day to clean up the mess he made while eating alone. Nobody told me how my heart would tighten when I got home today after being gone for six hours and took my squawking baby out. Nobody told me how I would feel when sooo tired I put out a sheet on the floor, put toys all over, grabbed a pillow for me, lay down and my birdy only wanted to snuggle with me. Nobody told me how it would feel to have a little bird body across your chest and neck, little head on your cheek. I was not told how soft his kisses would be or how warm his face was as he fell asleep on my cheek cooing softly. Nobody told me how long I would lay there awake so he could sleep. Everybody told me I would love him. Nobody could tell me how much. I just wanted to thank you again for sending Oscar home with us- he has been a joy! He loves to share our dinner (especially mashed potatoes) and hang out on the couch with us. His favorite is when we all get playing Guitar Hero- he seems to think that he can do a better job singing, and the louder we play, the more excited he gets! I never would have thought I would have as much trust in a bird as I do Oscar, and I truly cannot imagine how quiet and lonely the house would be without him. Thank you all again, from us, and Oscar! Michelle, Oscar and Family LORI BIRD AND JUB JUB-conures Hi Angela, We're so happy at our new house. Our little brother Felix is craaaaaaaaaazy and has lots of cool toys. We're both sitting on heads and giving kisses and having tons of fun. Take a look at our picture with Felix in . Thanks for helping us find our new home!! We love you! Lori & Jub ![]() THANK YOU FRESH START, WE HAVE A GREAT NEW FAMILY WITH A NEW BROTHER, FELIX! REMMY-cockatoo Hi! wanted to give you an update-Remmy is wonderful!!! he's talking and playing. He has even quieted down some. He loves going for walks-that's when he decides to let loose! the wings open, crest up and belts out the loudest anything he can!!! just wanted to say thanks and let you know all is well! MACKEY-cockatoo Hi Angela,I will send a picture with Mackey doing ''Scary Bird'' which he does all the time. LOL Last night Mackey apparently did NOT want to sleep alone so what he did was creeped into our bed and slept on me and Bill. He seemed cold and got under the blankets or maybe he is just spoiled. Thats it. Oh yeah, and its not easy to drink coffee around him since he comes running to try and get a beak full. We dont know where he got that from. He also loves scrambled eggs! Weird he is but in a good way. With all of the above Mackey loves loves loves music and to dance. Thanks Again Angela Sophia the Special Needs Cockatiel Hello Angela! Just wanted to drop a line on here about our little Sophia. Sophia came to us (Fresh Start) from a home with over 50 birds. She has a malformed beak from a bite from an African Grey (either Windsor or Captain), and her previous owners nursed her back to health without the assistance of a vet. After a long day of getting all of the new residents settled in, Sophia was begging me for some of my cookie from the side of her cage. She should have been stressed out and seeking peace and quiet, not friendship and food, yet there she was. I had promised I would come home empty handed after this large rescue, but Sophia stole my heart. Her beak was so long, it was poking into her chest, the other birds were picking on her, and she couldn't preen or climb around the cage. It was decided that Sophia would come home with me and join our small flock, and after a good beak trimming, Sophia happily sits on my sons shoulder and preens his hair for hours on end. He reads to her and preens her head feathers, spoils her with millet and toys, and has her out of her cage more than in, which she was NOT used to! Thank you, Ang, for letting Sophia come home with me that night- she has brought nothing but joy and amazement to me, and we now have another member of the family hooked! Jamie. PEE WEE-conure Hi Angela, It is I, Joanie who adopted Pee Wee. He is doing fine!! He still won't get close to my fingers yet but I go eye to eye with him and he never tries to bite. I am hoping that soon I can get him to "step-up". But even if we never get that far I am just so happy to have him. I don't know how I got along without him…he is my little prince. I hope everything is well on your end too. I sure hope people are adopting these fine birds!!! Take care and I'll be in touch again!!! Joanie S. BILL AND HILDA- cockatiels I don’t know if you’ll remember me, but in XXXXXXX, XXXX, I adopted two cockatiels, Bill and Hilda. I had to keep them in two separate cages because Bill (later named Gambino) had pecked all the feathers off the back of Hilda’s (later named Specky) head. They immediately adapted to life in our home and became good friends with our 13-year-old cockatiel, Cookie. Bill (Gambino) became attached to me almost instantly. He would groom my face and hair for around an hour each night. Hilda (Specky), the frightened, shy bird, proved to be one of the smartest and most adventurous birds I’ve ever had in my 25+ years of having birds. She can’t fly, but walks around our bedroom floor, across our couch, and all over, leading the other birds and exploring every object. She loves to have the back of her head and under her chin scratched and can insist we do that for 30-60 minutes a night! She plays with her special necklaces we wear around our necks and also calls when she’s ready to be put to bed. She is quite a character and I don’t know how I ever managed without her! Last September, Bill died after a short illness. When I noticed he wouldn’t eat in June, I took him to our Avian vet twice over the summer. She gave him insulin injections, which picked him up for a few weeks, but she said since he was older she didn’t expect him to live. It broke my heart when he slipped away one morning. He is the only bird in 25 years that bonded to me primarily. Our birds always seem to be crazy about my kind husband, although I’m the one who feeds them, cleans their cage and spends hours giving them attention. Hilda (Specky) is still a character and she and Cookie are happy companions. These birds are my joy! I can not thank you enough for opening your shelter and caring for these wonderful creatures. I would like to try to help you, Who know? Maybe I’ll visit you one day soon and adopt another bird or two. You are the best!! C. Mendicino SWEETNESS AKA HOWIE-cockatiel Hi. Howie's fine. He has a new home with lots of toys & he's just fine. He actually likes to be out more then what we let our other birds. He sits on my poodle's back if she's on my husband's lap . It's really cute. Thanks for everything.Nina & Mark L. WINNIE-amazon Hi Angela,I wanted to let you know that Winnie is adjusting nicely to her new home. She's been talking up a storm and is eating, drinking, and playing. She is especially attached to my husband and son and other male voices. She's a joy to have and we love her very much. She's allowing us to pet her head and belly and has us laughing all the time...which of course causes her to laugh! Thanks so much for giving us this wonderful opportunity! We'll keep you updated on Winnie and thanks again!Susan COCKATOO AND MACAW -Fresh Start has removed the names of the family in the email below to protect their privacy during an emotional time. Hi Angela: My name is xxxxx and my daughter is xxxxxx who emailed you about our macaw, Lady Gwen. My sister-in-law is xxxxxx who I believe you are familiar with - she went through you to find a "forever" home for her cockatoo. As you know by xxxxxxx emails, we unfortunately need to give up our macaw, Gwen. She is a beautiful bird who we rescued in the past to try and save her, with the hope of adding her to our family. Sadly, it is not working out and at this point we are ready to place her with you in order for her to have a wonderful "forever" family. my sister-in-law was very pleased with the outcome of your facility and your dedication in finding her cockatoo a forever family. This is very difficult, as I'm sure you can understand, for xxxxxxx to do this; therefore, she has asked me to continue with the process on her behalf. Thank you very much. xxxxx xxxxxxx Nokia- African Gray Hi Angela! Just a little update on Skoke, aka Nokia, the African Gray that we adopted from you. I have to tell you, I just cannot imagine this house without her in it! She is such a joy- always making us laugh and constantly suprising us with her intelligence. She has a new trick where she spins around on the kitchen floor, beak to the ground, until she gets so dizzy that she waddles over for me to pick her up for a cuddle. I cannot imagine where these poor birds would wind up if it wasn't for you finding them good homes, and getting them ready for adoption- so many thanks to you and all of the wonderful people that trust in you to find that perfect forever home for their feathered friends. Many thanks to you and the rescue team, and kisses from our flock to yours!!! Jamie ![]() NOKIA TICO- AMAZON angela and team bob and i would like to thank you for tico. he is adjusting nicely and starting to talk up a storm. i think he is a wounderful addition to the family, thanks so much, marianne ZAZU, SATURDAY AND CADY-COCKATIELS Hi Angela:Zazu and Saturday are doing great!!
