FRESH START BIRD RESCUE'S
AWARD'S OF EXELLENCE

FRESH STARTS EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS

FRESH START'S COMMUNITY PROGRAMS
BENIFIT BOTH OUR BIRD RESIDENTS AND THE COMMUNITY WE SHARE.

-Fresh Start is actively involved in educational expos throughout our community. We are currently offering educational, hands on programs to local nursing homes, schools, scouts, churches, and other groups and organizations.

-These programs are only offered during the warmer months of the year when it is safer for us to be taking outside our bird residents.

-We also are limited on how many programs we can do during that time as to not stress out the birds.

-If you are interested in having Fresh Start team members and our bird residents visit your group or organization during the spring of 2008, please drop us an email.

-There is no charge for this service but donations are always greatly appreciated.

-If you would like more information, please contact us at: freshstart4pets@rcn.com

Thank You, The Fresh Start Rescue Team

COMMUNITY SERVICE PROGRAM

[Details coming soon]

MEET AND GREET

By Invitation Only

ONCE A MONTH THE FRESH START TEAM WILL INVITE AND HOST A GET TOGETHER FOR POTENTIAL ADOPTORS [THAT HAVE AN APPROVED APPLICATION ON FILE] TO VISIT WITH THE BIRD[s] THEY ARE INTERESTED IN ADOPTING.

OUR GOAL WITH THIS PROGRAM IS TO INTRODUCE THE POTENTIAL ADOPTIVE FAMILY TO THE BIRD FRIEND THEY ARE INTERESTED IN, IN A COMFORTABLE ENVIRONMENT. IT ALLOWS BOTH TO INTERACT AND GET TO KNOW EACH OTHER WHILE ALSO ALLOWING THE FAMILY TO SEE ALL OF THE GREAT QUALITIES THE BIRD HAS ALONG WITH ANY ISSUES OR PROBLEMS THAT MAY ALSO BE PRESENT.

THE "MEET AND GREETS" GO A LONG WAY IN HELPING TO INSURE A LIFELONG COMMITMENT.

ATTENDING A MEET AND GREET DOES NOT GUARANTEE AN ADOPTION

MEET AND GREET UPDATE:

FRESH START'S FIRST MEET AND GREET WAS HELD IN NOVEMBER 2007

Our first meet and greet was a lot of fun as well as emotional for both the team members and the bird residents at Fresh Start.

WE ARE PROUD TO ANNOUNCE THAT OUR FIRST MEET AND GREET HAS LEAD TO OUR FIRST MEET AND GREET ADOPTION.

CONGRATULATIONS TO BOTH TRAVIS AND OUR BIRD RESIDENT MERLYN,THE BLUE AND GOLD MACAW!! THESE TWO KNEW THEY WERE MEANT TO BE A FAMILY FROM THE MOMENT THEY MET.

TRAVIS AND MERLYN, WE WISH YOU BOTH A BRIGHT, HAPPY FUTURE TOGETHER!! MERLYN, WE'LL MISS YOU, BUDDY!!

HELP MISSING BIRDS

Neighborhood Animal Watch

-When coming across a lost or hurt animal we need to react in the calm, caring way that most animal lovers imagine they themselves would react in a similar situation.

-Many people, however, are ill-equipped to deal with an animal emergency at a moment's notice. But, with a little preparation, anyone with a big heart and a love for animals can become a guardian angel to critters.

-Being on the lookout for animals who need help is one of the best ways to have an immediate and direct effect on animals, You can be the difference between life and death for an animal. And you may be that animal's only hope for finding her family or being adopted into a new family.

People often think that someone else will take care of the problem, but there are so many animals who need help that it's up to each of us to do everything we can every time we see an animal in need.

-When animals roam, whether lost or abandoned, they face extreme risks. Removing animals from dangerous situations can literally save their lives.

-Helping a wandering critter prevents injury or death from traffic, starvation, cruelty, disease, attacks from other animals, and other dangerous and inhumane conditions, -Bringing the animal to safety is the kindest thing you can do

Ready For Anything

-Unlike humans, companion animals can't dial 911 or tell their family where they are. They are at the mercy of the people whom they meet, and, as domesticated creatures, they are almost entirely dependent on human compassion.

-Many people want to help, but are apprehensive or unsure of what to do. However, a little bit of education and preparation can turn a passive animal lover into an active one.

-Yet, no matter how confident a person feels about helping an animal in need, it's also important to remember that approaching an unknown animal can be dangerous.

-People should always be cautious. Use common sense—if you don't feel comfortable handing an animal who may be unfriendly or fearful, call animal control or your local shelter and wait with the animal until help arrives.

-For more specific information on what steps to take once an at-risk animal has been identified call your local police or animal shelter.

-It is also recommends that you prepare an emergency animal kit for your vehicle. That way, whether an animal is on the side of the highway or on your front porch, you'll be prepared.

An emergency animal kit should include:

    -Cell phone
-Phone numbers and addresses of 24-hour veterinary clinics, 24-hour animal shelters and animal control agencies (find local information in your phone book or go to www.Pets911.com and enter your zip code.)
-Cat carrier, pillowcase or cardboard box
    -Adjustable 6-foot slip lead
    -Bottled water
-Strong-smelling foods (canned tuna, dried liver, etc.)
    -Treats
    -Food and water dishes
-Animal first aid kit (available online through Medi-Pet and CPR Savers & First Aid Supply.)
    -Flares
    -Blankets or towels
-Animal first aid book (Pet First Aid, authored by The HSUS and the American Red Cross, is available online.)

There are thousands of animals who need help, whatever their story, these animals are alone in a dangerous world and it's up to animal lovers to act on their behalf.

TAKE ACTION, TELL EVERYONE

-Take action. The sooner you get started, the greater your chances of recovering your lost pet quickly.

-First, check the LostPetSOS Pet Lost & Found database to see if anyone's reported your lost bird, if not report your bird

Create colorful Lost Pet flyers that stand out. Lost pets are often found within a mile or two of their home.
you want people to see the words at a distance.

-Include a picture of your lost pet, as well as a general description of your dog, cat, or other pet and your telephone number displayed in a conspicuous place.

-If you can, offer a reward (but don’t say how much).

-DO NOT include your address or your full name, in order to avoid becoming an unwitting victim of fraudulent activity.

-It’s also important to WITHHOLD some of your lost pet’s specific identifying characteristics. This will help you determine if a caller actually has YOUR pet.

-Post the Lost Pet Flyers throughout your neighborhood.

-Search for unusual "hiding" places around your home. Don’t forget to bring along a flashlight! If your lost pet has been injured, it may have crawled into a small space close to home for safety. Search your neighborhood, and make plenty of noise--call your pet by name, make some other familiar sound, but be sure to stop and listen periodically, in case your lost pet makes noises in responses.

-Talk to your mail carrier, newspaper delivery person and anyone who is regularly in your neighborhood. Ask them to keep a look out for your lost pet.

-Take someone with you and go door-to-door to talk to all the residents in the area where your dog, cat, or other pet was lost. Leave a Lost Pet Flyer with each person you speak to. If no one’s home, attach a Lost Pet Flyer to the door.

-Place a "lost pet" classified ad in your local newspaper(s).

-If a caller claims to have found your pet, be cautious ... Try to meet them and the pet in a public place, such as a store parking lot, during daylight hours.

-Try to avoid giving callers your home address.

Always take someone with you to investigate a caller’s claims.

-If you believe your pet was stolen, contact the police or sheriff to file a police report.

-Contact your local Animal Control office, perhaps even leaving a few Lost Pet Flyers with them.

-Continue to visit your local animal shelter(s) at least every two days. Don’t depend upon employees there to contact you, or to even know if your lost pet has been brought in. Verbal descriptions can be subjective, and therefore not always useful: what is "small" to one person can be "medium" to another. You need to see for yourself.

-If you haven't recovered your lost pet after several days, search our Pet Lost & Found database again. Perhaps someone found your pet and reported it here (not everyone who has found a stray animal will search the lost pet listings first).
