Volunteers Wildlife abounds in the diverse habitats surrounding Lake Wilhelm. From Shore birds to the majestic eagle soaring over the local farm fields. Goddard State Park provides a paradise for birds and bird watchers. Many of the volunteer projects at the park have focused around our feathered friends. The American Bald Eagle is often seen perched over looking the lake. The Osprey has found nesting on the lake shores beneficial to raising their young. Dinner is just out the door. Volunteers have erected nesting platforms in attempts to draw the nesting birds away from the hazards of using electric power poles. ![]() Dangerous housing ![]() Building nesting platforms Purple Martin have been drawn back to the lake by efforts of the nesting box program. Nests are checked regularly to help eliminate pests harmful to the young. Keepers also check and monitor growth and general health of the young birds until they fledge. ![]() Box Checks
Blue Birds and sweet song and have also been a successful nesting program within the park. Over 100 blue bird boxes receive care by our volunteers. ![]() true blue bird sky
MORE THAN BIRDS Local Boy Scout projects have enhanced the wildlife habitat. Sportsman groups and individuals also work on the projects of personal interest. Turtle Platforms, Fish structure, insect boxes and Bat houses provide shelter or refuse to any species in need. Projects for groups or individuals may be discussed with park management. |
