PA DIVISION HAPPENINGS
PA Division Speakers' Bureau Now Forming!

Calling all members of the PA Division! Are you or someone that you know interested in presenting at a chapter meeting, a workshop, an APW event, etc.? Would you like to visit other chapters and share your knowledge with them? If so, we’re looking for you to join the Speakers’ Bureau!

We all know that educational programs are provided at levels of IAAP. Just about every chapter in our Division holds an educational program at their monthly meeting. Why not make some of this great information available across the state?

Here’s what we’re looking for:

  • New and different topics that address current issues and are headlined in newspapers and/or magazines.
  • Original and other research on the workplace or administrative professionals in particular.
  • Trends in the profession, business, or employment in general.
  • Training skills that can be applied immediately in the workplace.
  • Upper level skills now required for administrative professionals in light of changing economic and business trends (i.e., use of integrated technologies, project management of remote teams, collaborative writing, etc.)
  • Technology skills for advanced users or uses of the latest hardware and software (i.e., cyber meetings, web site maintenance or management, desktop publishing, graphic design, etc.)
  • Information designed or customized specifically for the administrative professional population.

  •
    Here’s what we don’t want:

  • Motivational sessions without strong content.
  • Generic sessions that are pulled out of a tired repertoire and regularly given to mixed groups.
  • Sessions that hinge on old stereotypes of admins and don’t recognize the new roles that they play.
  • Sessions that are passive for the participants and don’t include take home action plans.
  • Sessions that aren’t cutting edge.

  • It is important to keep in mind that our educational programs are often taken back to the workplaces and shared with co-workers. They are also shared among chapters and each other. Our educational programs should fit in with our Division’s mission and be career-oriented.

Like all other non-profit organizations, contracted speakers must fit within a chapter’s or the Division’s budgetary constraints. There are times when a chapter does not have funding available for speakers as well. Speakers that present for “no fee” would have their travel expenses paid for by the chapter or Division hosting the event.

Interested? Complete the application and submit to Diana Comber, PA Division Vice President via fax at 484-362-0415 or e-mail at PADivisionIAAP@comcast.net. This form can be downloaded by clicking the link on the left side of this webpage.

Welcome to the Pennsylvania Division Certification Corner. You may be asking “What is certification and why should I become certified?”

IAAP offers the Certified Professional Secretary® (CPS®) rating and the Certified Administrative Professional® (CAP®) rating. Professional certification demonstrates that you are committed to your career as an administrative professional.

To get you started, here are some quick facts about certification:

    • The CPS Examination is a one-day exam consisting of three parts.

    • The CAP Examination is a one and one-half day exam consisting of four parts.

    • The exams are administered the first Friday and Saturday of May and November each year at over 250 locations.

    • Deadlines for exams: March 1 for the May exam (postmarked by February 15); September 1 for the November exam (postmarked by August 15).

    • Parts 1-3 of the CPS and CAP exams cover the following curriculum:

    1. Office Systems & Technology
    2. Office Administration
    3. Management
    4. Part 4 of the CAP exam covers Advanced Organizational Planning.

    • Current CPS holders are required to take only Part 4 of the CAP exam to achieve the CAP designation.

A Certification Review Guide is available from IAAP. It contains the examination outline, bibliography, sample questions and other tips. The certification application packet can be downloaded at www.iaap-hq.org or contact IAAP Headquarters at: email - service@iaap-hq.org; voice - 816-891-6600.

The PA Division Certification Committee is available for questions or information regarding certification and recertification. Once you have achieved your certification, you are required to recertify every five years. More details on recertification can also be found at iaap-hq.org or contact the Certification Committee.
