HAVE YOU BEEN CART'D?

In October of 2006, President Bush signed the "Pets Evacuation and Transportation Standards Act of 2006", which states that every disaster emergency plan must now include plans for the safety and well being of household pets and service animals.

Several states, including Pennsylvania, started programs to help rescue animals. The Pennsylvania State Animal Response Team, or PASART for short, is similar to the Red Cross, but for animals. Under PASART, each county has created CART - County Animal Response Team.

Volunteers can select what type of animals they would be interested/willing to assist. If your experience is limited to basic care, you can still help with registrations, phone calls, feedings, exercise, etc during an emergency and with publicity, membership, training, organization, etc. when there's not an emergency. CART also has workshops to train volunteers to assist with more tasks and to become more involved.

Most counties in Pennsylvania have a CART program. Only about seven do not.

For additional information, or to find a CART near you, please visit the PASART website.
