Our purpose is to engage people of all ages in the history of Jefferson County. We collect and care for relevant objects, images and documents, and we invite county residents and visitors to research our materials, interact with our exhibits, take part in our programs, and read our publications in order to encourage an understanding of our past and present and a vision for our future

Before 1492 - Woodland Indians live and travel through the area

1492-1794 - Eastern seaboard settled by Europeans who gradually move west

1794 - Joseph Barnett, Andrew Barnett, and Samuel Scott come to the area

1797 - Joseph Barnett returns with his family and settles at Port Barnett

1797-1830 - Pioneer period

1830-1861 - A period of slow development

1861-1865 - Civil War (The 105th or "Wild CatRegiment" formed)

1865-1874 - Timbering expands

1874 - Railroad completed across the county

1883 - Coal production and export begins

1917 - US enters World War I

1918 - Jefferson County gradually slips into depressed conditions

1941-1945 - World War II

1945-1960s - Economically strong, then several companies created during WWII close

1970 - Interstate 80 crosses Pennsylvania and traverses Jefferson County

1975 Vietnam Conflict ends

2004 Jefferson County celebrates 200 years as a county
