The Jefferson County Historical Society, in partnership with the Northfork Chapter 29 of the Society for Pennsylvania Archaeology has began a formal mapping survey of the of the Dedicated (Scripture) Rocks locations carved by Douglas Stahlman throughout the Brookville area. .

The 530 rocks documented in Mr. Sthalman’s day journals are all located on private properties and the survey is being conducted with landowner permission.

Carved during the early part of the 20th century, these works and the story of the man who carved them has been a longstanding topic of interest to the people of Brookville and the surrounding area.

Our project will include:

  • An identification numbering system that will correlate each identified carved rock with location and content
  • Development of accurate location map (either by survey or GPS location) of each identified rock
  • Photographic and written documentation of each rock using current archaeological standards
  • Comparison, when possible, to Mr. Stallman’s handwritten journals

When the project is completed, the History Center will provide each of the participating landowners a map and copies of the documentation for each of the carved rocks on their property which could be used as a future reference to help avoid their destruction or disturbance during land use activities such as logging, drilling or construction. It is not the intent of the survey to assist the formation of any type of mandatory property restrictions for the landowners regarding these sites.

We hopefully will eventually able to produce a publication chronicling this individuals life and works.

Volunteers are readily accepted to assist with locating, cleaning, mapping, and photographing these sites. If you are interested in participating, Please contact Ken Burkett at the History Center.
