We are often asked how The Lutheran Orthodox Church compares to other Lutheran and non Lutheran church bodies and what our relationship is to them.
We hope this page helps to answer some of these questions.
(If errors are found here, please drop us an email and we will correct).

The Lutheran Evangelical Protestant Church

Both the Lutheran Orthodox Church and The Lutheran Evangelical Protestant Church (LEPC) share a long history. They both came from The Evangelical Protestant Church which goes back to the days of Martin Luther. The two churches split in 2004 over the issue of Apostolic Succession. However, both churches have reconcilled their differences and are in Full Communion and Pulpit and Altar Fellowship. Some members of each Church sit on the other's Governing Council. Many statements issued are issued jointly. As far as faith and practice, there is little discernable difference. LOC Churches tend to be more liturgical as a whole.
Current headquarters of The LEPC is Cayce So. Carolina. Presiding Bishop, MostRev Nancy Drew.

The Evangelical Community Church-Lutheran

The practices of The ECCL are very similar to the LOC. Services are liturgical in nature, altar focused, and like the LOC, the ECCL considers itself to be Evangelical Catholic, rather than Protestant. A Full Communion and Pulpit and Altar Fellowship was in place until Janurary, 2006 when it was rescinded unilaterally by The ECCL over the issue of female ordinations. The LOC did not rescind it's communion agreement and recognizes the ministers of The ECCL.
The ECCL Headquarters is in Kansas City Mo, The Most Rev Irl Gladfelter, Primate.

The Athanasian Catholic Church of The Augsburg Confession:

Despite the name, The ACCAC is a Lutheran denomination, and just like the LOC, considers itself Evangelical Catholic. The ACCAC is very liturgical, and similar to the LOC in every respect with the exception of female ministers. The ACCAC does not recognize female ordinations, but a Full Communion and Pulpit and Altar Fellowship agreement is currently active and in place. The LOC fully recognizes the ACCAC as a Church of The Augsburg Confession. Headquartered in Chester Pa, the Primate is The Most Rev Ray Copp.

The Association of Independent Evangelical Lutheran Churches

Headquartered in NYC, The AIELC is presided over by The Most Rev Pedro Bravo-Guzman. A Full Communion and Pulpit and Altar Fellowship agreement is in place between The LOC and AIELC. Also very liturgical, there is not much discernable difference between the LOC and AIELC and a shared worship service takes place on special occasions. The LOC recognizes all ministers of The AIELC.

The Association of Free Lutheran Congregations

Although no formal Communion Agreement is in effect, there are cordial relations between The LOC and AFLC. The LOC recognizes all pastors of The AFLC, and the LOC has provided 2 supply pastors on an interim basis to the AFLC. The LOC fully recognizes the AFLC as an equal Lutheran Church despite the many differences in style of worship and corporate structure. Headquartered in Minnesota, the current president is Pastor Robert Lee.

The American Orthodox Catholic Church-Propheta Jurisdiction

The Full Communion and Pulpit and Altar Fellowship between the LOC and AOCC has been unilaterally recinded by The AOCC over the issue of female ordinations. In their letter to us they stated that they no longer ordain women among other issues even though the LOC clearly stated that we ordained females prior to any communion agreement. The LOC accepts their unilateral decision. Both churches are in many of the same Apostolic lineages and share much in common. The styles of worship are both liturgical and sacramental. It's Metropolitan Archbishop is MostRev Mark Pultorak, and his assistant is Archdeacon Dan Palmer. The American Orthodox Catholic Church is headquartered in Watertown NY.

The Communion of Ante-Nicene Christian Fellowships

The Lutheran Orthodox Church shares Full Communion and Pulpit and Altar Fellowship with The ACF. Both churches are liturgical and sacramental, and congregation members of each body may receive the sacraments administered by either church. The LOC and ACF cross-consecrate clergy on the others behalf as needed. The Presiding Bishop of The Communion of Ante-Nicene Christian Fellowships is The Rev Brother Eric Thomas. Headquartered in Knoxville, Tenn.

The Apostolic Episcopal Church

Both the Apostolic Episcopal Church and the LOC share the same Apostolic lineages and although there is no formal intercommunion arrangement, both churches recognize each other as valid churches in Apostolic Succession and joint worship services have been held on special occasions. Worship services are very similar, liturgical and sacramental. Cross-consecration of Bishops are recognized, and the primates of both churches have participated in the consecrating of other Bishops. The LOC recognizes all ministers of The AEC and cordial relations exist between the two churches. Archbishop Francis Spataro is the current Primate, and the AEC is headquartered in NYC.

The Ecumenical Catholic Diocese of The Americas

The LOC recognizes the Ecumenical Catholic Diocese of The Americas and it is through the office of its Primate, MostRev Peter Paul Brennan, Universal Primate of The Order of Corporate Reunion, and his predecessor, Archbishop Nils Bertil Persson, of the AEC, that the line of Apostolic Succession was transferred to the LOC. No formal intercommunion agreement exists in writing, but both churches work together in the closest of bonds and a deep mutual respect of its current Primate exists. The ECA is headquartered in NYC.
