STILLWATER LAKE DAM

Camp Minsi needs your help! As you may already know, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has declared the dam at Camp Minsi a B-2 High Hazard Dam in need of repair. Our council leadership has spent a great deal of time and effort working on possible solutions to this issue.

As follow up to the recent District Roundtable meeting, following are the materials reviewed:

We are asking that each person write to the Governor, their State Senator and State Representative. The goal is 100 letters per Scout unit.

Again, thanks for your efforts in this important project and we look forward to receiving your letters.

WORDS FROM OUR DISTRICT COMMITTEE CHAIR

As Summer Begins, Don’t Forget Scouting

By Jacob Brown, District Chairman

As the warm summer months begin, and thoughts turn to trips to the shore, and other summer vacation plans, I remind you not to forget scouting. Scouting is a year-round program. I know that some units suspend meetings for the summer, or meet on a less frequent basis, but that does not mean that scouting stops.

Don’t forget Day Camp, or Resident Camp. Our council provides a quality summer camping program that I urge you to participate in. Many units have high adventure trips planned, and if you are attending a high adventure camp, I hope you enjoy it. As a scout, I had the opportunity to attend the Maine High Adventure Camp in located on the Alagash Waterway, as well as Florida Sea Base. Both were very different experiences, but experiences I will remember for the rest of my life.

If you are in need of a service project, the summer is a good time to work on that Eagle Project, or earn a few merit badges without having to worry about that book report you put off until the last minute, or that major test you need to study for. Make the most of your summer, but enjoy it also.

Most of all, I hope you have a safe summer. Use the ideals and principles of scouting in your everyday life. If you are going swimming at the neighborhood pool, or the pool in your back yard, take a buddy. If you are going for a morning jog, or bike ride, make sure you drink plenty of water. Most importantly, Be Prepared for whatever life throws your way.

Thank you for your commitment to the Boy Scouts of America, the Minsi Trails Council, and the Trexler District. Please do not hesitate to call on me if I can assist you or your unit in any way.

Yours in Scouting,

Jacob Brown
District Chairman

WORDS FROM OUR DISTRICT COMMISSIONER

Dear Boy Scout Leaders:

There is a business axiom that says that it is less expensive and easier to retain a customer than to develop a new one, and a business needs to develop a relationship with the customer. This also applies to scouting. There are 10 Scoutreach Packs at Allentown schools. The Allentown School District has documented results from these Cub Scouts of better school attendance, better grades, better behavior. The school district has become seriously committed to scouting at their schools.

There may be an estimated 50 Webelos II Scouts among these Packs that if another scout does not reach out and share their knowledge about continuing with Boy Scouts, they will be lost to Scouting! We as Adult Scouters need to have our Boy Scouts put on their uniforms and visit these Packs when they meet after school, and be there to set an example and develop the relationship even if it is only to help close a meeting and clean up. These are our younger brothers in scouting.

When the boys do this, they need to check in at the appropriate school office, identify themselves, and explain their visits. Any help would be appreciated.

As an incentive, I and our district chairman will personally will fund a pizza party for the troops that recruit at least 5 of these Scoutreach Webelos II Cub Scouts before the end of May 2008.

Here are the Units. Most meet 3-4 PM after school

Monday
Pack 90 - McKinley Elementary School - about 70 active Cub Scouts
Pack 94 - Jefferson Elementary School - about 25-30 active Cub Scouts
Pack 95 - Union Terrace Elementary School - about 25-30 active Cub Scouts
Pack 99 - Cleveland Elementary School - about 45-50 active Cub Scouts

Tuesday
Pack 91 - Central Elementary School - about 20-25 active Cub Scouts
Pack 466 - Mosser Elementary School - about 20-30 active Cub Scouts

Thursday
Pack 93 - Roosevelt Elementary School - about 15-25 active Cub Scouts
Pack 99 - Cleveland Elementary School - second day of Den Meetings
Pack 444 - Dodd Elementary School - about 70-75 active Cub Scouts

Friday
Pack 102 - Sheridan Elementary School - about 10-20 active Cub Scouts
Pack 55 - Life Academy - about 20-30 active Cub Scouts

Sincerely yours in scouting,

Terry Kennedy, District Commissioner
and
Jacob Brown
District Chairman

WORDS FROM OUR DISTRICT EXECUTIVE

Dear Trexler District,

Hello! Halloween is coming! In a fun way to get the word out about scouting, the council will have boxes of Mike and Ike’s available to any of you who would normally be handing out candy to children at your homes. The Mike and Ike boxes will have pre-made cards to attach to them that will advertise scouting. The note will direct people to the council website (we can’t individualize to each unit) to join scouting! If you or any of your volunteers are interested in giving out the candy for Halloween, please contact me as soon as possible to make arrangements. Thanks!
YIS,

PHILMONT SLOT WANTED
Troop 431 has a young man who very much would like to go to Philmont this summer but who has a commitment to a church service activity that prevents him going along at the time Troop 431 is going. If anyone knows of another unit (Trexler or otherwise) or a Council contingent that has a Philmont slot open this summer (preferably early July), please respond to lintteach@aol.com. Thanks

ALL AMERICAN "GREEN TEAM"

Great News! Wal-Mart has partnered with the Boy Scouts and Elm Research Institute, a nonprofit organization dedicated to restoring the native American elm.

This trio forms the All- American "Green Team." Under the auspices of the Johnny Elmseed Community Service Project, scouts will help restore American elms to our streets and continue the legacy of Eagle Scout, Ian Burns.

For more information call Elm Research Institute 1-800-367-3567 to request the Johnny Elmseed brochure. Eagle Scout candidates are encouraged to respond.

BURKHART TRAILS AT THE WILDLANDS CONSERVANCY

YOUR HELP IS VERY MUCH NEEDED!! The Wildlands Conservancy “Burkhart Trails" on South Mountain Road have laid out new trails and are in need of people clearing them!! This would make a GREAT SERVICE PROJECT for Troops and Crews and would help better the Wildlands Conservancy "Burkhardt Property". The property is enjoyed by residents, geo cachers, dog walkers, hikers, etc.

If you would like to help clear the trails, please contact Tom Gettings at the Wildlands Conservancy or 610-965-4397 ext. 40 for directions and to get information of what is needed.

HOPE YOUR TROOP AND/OR CREW CAN HELP OUT!!

THE MUSEUM of INDIAN CULTURE, AMERICAN INDIAN MUSEUM

On Aug 18th-19th, from 10:30AM-6PM, The Museum of Indian Culture, American Indian Museum on Fish Hatchery Road is holding a festival and is looking for help from Boy Scout Troops to help with carrying items to the food stands and emptying garbage cans.

If your Scouts are available on those dates for some of listed times to help, please contact Shirley Reis at 610-966-2248.

OPEN HOUSE AT FLINT HILL FARM

We are again thinking Spring, even if the weather isn't. Our Spring OPEN HOUSE is from 10AM till 4PM April 22 and 28. This is the first year we are holding the OPEN HOUSE under the Flint Hill Farm Educational Center, Inc., a non profit Educational component of the farm! It has been a dream, finally coming to reality over the past two years.

We are splitting the weekend to allow for the changes in weather. We are in NEED of volunteers this year: horseshoe painting, help with getting people on and off the haywagon, sales in the gift shop, food table, tours, walking ponies and many other tasks too numerous to mention. If you have any time and would like to come have a "play day' with us, even for a few hours to volunteer, we would appreciate the time.

As our dairy herd has grown, we now have 14 baby goats and a new Jersey cow, named Buttercup. Our peeps are still fluffy and lots of fun for the family to visit, too. We are sheering our sheep on Sunday the 22nd.

Please e-mail us with your time. If you can't volunteer, please come and bring your neighbors. God has blessed us greatly and we want to share the blessing.

Kathy from Flint Hill

VILLAGE at WILLOW LANE

Every day the residents at Village at Willow Lane rest home in Macungie, throw away vast quantities of newspapers. They are looking for a troop that may currently run a newspaper recycling program to pick up these papers. Any Troop that would be willing to pick up this material please contact Pam Blum at 610-421-8100 extension 7. Sounds like it could be a steady fund-raising program, if a recycler can be found.
