Welcome to the Home for Moraine Trails Venturing on the Web...
So…what is Venturing?

Venturing is a division of Scouting for 14-20 year old young men AND young women.
Venturing crews can be found in all three districts of the council and more are starting every year.
Venturing crews can focus on any one of a number of areas of interest
– high adventure, sports, religious life and community service, arts and hobbies, or Sea Scouting

Fun with a Purpose

Venturing is an adventure on many levels. Yes, many Venturing Crews conduct high adventure trips - backpacking, white-water rafting, caving, rock climbing, shooting archery and firearms and the like.

But perhaps the greater adventure is that the Venturers themselves select the activities, plan them and implement their plans. With a light touch from adult advisors and consultants, these young men and women take the responsibility for their own success.

Along with Outdoor programs, all Venturing Crews are encouraged to include Service, Citizenship, Fitness, Social, and Leadership related activities in their program year.

Not only can youth take leadership roles in their local crews, but they can run for office at the Council, Area, Region and National levels as well.

One thing that all Venturers have in common is that they agree to live by the Venturing Oath and Code:

Venturing Oath

As a Venturer, I promise to do my duty to God and help strengthen America, to help others, and to seek truth, fairness, and adventure in our world.

  Venturing Code

As a Venturer, I believe that America's strength lies in our trust in God and in the courage, strength, and traditions of our people.
I will, therefore, be faithful in my religious duties and will maintain a personal sense of honor in my own life.
I will treasure my American heritage and will do all I can to preserve and enrich it.
I will recognize the dignity and worth of all humanity and will use fair play and goodwill in my daily life.
I will acquire the Venturing attitude that seeks truth in all things and adventure on the frontiers of our changing world.

100th Anniversary of Boy Scouting in America

There are many opportunities for Venturing Crews and individual Venturers to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Boy Scouting in America.

2010 Area Camporee All of Western Pennsylvania will be celebrating the 100th anniversary with the Area 4 Camporee at Moraine State Park on September 24-26, 2010. It isn't too far away to start planning. You can even participate in the planning. Contact the Council Service Center at 724-287-6791 for more information on how to participate.

2010 National Jamboree Venturers can participate in the National Boy Scout Jamboree held in the summer of 2010 by signing up as youth staff. For only $397.50 you can participate in the Jamboree from the inside. Positions are open in most areas from support services like dining halls to running rappelling towers, BMX tracks and other program areas. See www.bsajamboree.org for more information. You can sign up online through www.myscouting.org. You will need the membership number on your membership card to sign in.

National Hall of Leadership At http://scouting.org/100years/100years/nationalhallofleadership.aspx you can nominate the youth or adult in Scouting that has made a difference in your life or the lives of others. One person will be selected from each council. Nominate your candidate now.

Generations Connection The tree is an important symbol of the family—a family tree, the life of a tree that spans generations, the belief that a tree will continue to provide, long after we're gone. Because of that symbolism—and a shared mission for service and environmental stewardship—we could think of no better Generations Connection partner than the Arbor Day Foundation! Arbor Day has designated official BSA 100th Anniversary trees for anyone to enjoy. Order yours at http://www.arborday.org/boyscouts. For every BSA 100th Anniversary tree purchased from Arbor Day, another will be planted in Montana at the newly created Boy Scouts of America Centennial Forest. The Centennial Forest will aid replanting of the Flathead National Forest following recent fires.

Alumni Connections If you have ever been involved in Scouting, the 100th anniversary is a great excuse to get involved again. Call the Council Service Center at 724-287-6791 for ideas on how you can help.

A Year of Celebration Starting in September 2009, Venturers and adult leaders can participate in earning a series of 100th anniversary patches in the areas of Leadership, Achievement, Community Service, Character and the Outdoors. Download this Adobe PDF file to see the requirements.
