NEWS FROM NARFE With Senate races in Alaska, Georgia and Minnesota still outstanding, Democrats have won at least six Senate seats now held by Republicans. Democrats defeated three Republican incumbents. In North Carolina state Sen. Kay Hagan scored a come-from-behind win over Republican Sen. Elizabeth Dole , in New Hampshire, former Gov. Jeanne Shaheen defeated Sen. John E. Sununu in a rematch of their closely contested 2002 race and in Oregon, State House Speaker, Jeff Merkley, won a close contest with incumbent Sen. Gordon Smith. Democrats also won seats left open by retiring Republican incumbents in Colorado (Mark Udall), New Mexico (Tom Udall) and Virginia (Mark Warner). There are 7 House races not yet decided. The Democrats net gain in House elections stands at 19. This could change but 6 of the seven remaining districts are now held by Republicans. 23 districts changed from Republican to Democrat when Democrats won 10 seats left open by Republican departures and 13 incumbent Republicans lost to the Democratic challenger. In the 4 Republican takeovers (FL-16, KS-2, LA-6, and TX-22) the incumbent Democrat was defeated by the Republican challenger. A complete list of House districts and Senate seats where the incumbent was NOT re-elected will run in the January issue of NARFE Congressional Quarterly (www.cqpolitics.com) continues to make content, that many pay handsomely to obtain, available for free. (Profiles of the new Members-Elect is available at http://www.cqpolitics.com/wmspage.cfm?parm1=158 For an excellent summary of this still unfinished election cycle go to |
Continued Most first time winners will have had little exposure to the federal civil service. Chapter and federation outreach resulting in individual or group meetings should cover income security and health security issues. The period prior to their swearing-in ceremonies in January, is an excellent time to meet the Members-Elect in their hometowns and begin their education.
