Living On The Land Grand Opening Event

The Living on the Land exhibit will formally open at a special grand opening for both JCHC and North Fork Chapter 29 members and their guests on Saturday, November 14th from 12:00 - 5:00 pm. The exhibit will open to the general public beginning the following week. From design to completion, this gallery has been in construction for over a year and contains many objects and images that represent the history of Jefferson County from its earliest history through today in eight sections that include:

Among the 8 areas of the exhibit is “Out of the Mist” Out of the Mist - begins with the county’s earliest fossil record and shows creatures from long ago and continues through the ice age and arrival of the Native Americans explaining their lifeways over the past 10,000 years.

Make plans to stop by and help us celebrate this year long endeavor to chronicle the history of Jefferson County.

Arroyo Tannery Site

Brian Fritz has completed the Arroyo Tannery Heritage Site Archaeological Mapping Project within a contract with the Jefferson County Historical Society which was made possible by an agreement with the Allegheny National Forest, USDA Forest Service with grant funding by the Lumber Heritage Region of Pennsylvania, Elk County commissioners and other matching sources.

Brian Fritz

The Field survey was conducted during the months of November and December of 2008, and March through May 2009. Over 2,000 points were measured with the total station, ruins of 145 buildings and structures were documented, and 440 photographs were taken. Thirty-five of these buildings and structures are attributed to the industrial aspects of the tannery. The remainder are attributed to Arroyo Village, but include some commercial enterprises that are not directly related to the operations of leather making. Evidence of thirty-seven houses, one boarding house, and one small cabin site was documented. Fifty-five small hand-dug holes located in back areas of former houses were interpreted as privies or outhouses

Brian’s complete report is available online at: www.quemahoning.com/Arroyo.htm
